A night away from NYC mid trip?

Hello,

We%26#39;re due to visit NYC at the end of October for 9 nights.

We%26#39;ve been several times before and are looking forward to the trip.

We thought we might head out of the city for a night or two - ideally travelling by train and finding a nice hotel not too far from a station.

We wondered about somewhere on Long Island?

If anyone has any general ideas or specific recommendations, please let me know.

Thanks in advance!

Simon

A night away from NYC mid trip?

Most of Long Island is pretty suburban, but the Hamptons, all the way at the east end of the island, would be a nice idea. That said, it%26#39;s not ideal not having a car once you%26#39;re there, but it%26#39;s doable. Both Southampton %26amp; East Hampton have inns and b %26amp; bs in the village and both of those villages also have restaurants, shops and even movie theaters. You can either use the train (Long Island Railroad) or the more frequently running but pricier buses (hamptonjitney.com or hamptonluxuryliner.com)

Montauk is at the very end of the Island, past the Hamptons and has plenty of motels and b %26amp; b%26#39;s but I think it%26#39;s more difficult to manage there without a car.

A Butler%26#39;s Manor is considered the nicest b %26amp; b in Southampton or the 1770 House which is more of an inn, both in town. The Southampton Inn is more like a upscale motel, but also in town. In East Hampton, Mill House Inn gets good reviews.

Just a heads up the Hamptons Film Festival is Oct 17-21 and will make finding a room difficult.

The fall is typically the time people think of heading north for the leaf changing season and end Oct. is ideal for that. Cold Spring is not far from Manhattan and popular day trip or overnight. Info here

Rhinebeck, NY is another popular trip and there are several inns %26amp; b %26amp; b%26#39;s there including the Beekman Arms and the Delameter.
