Hi
I%26#39;m hoping someone can help me, I basically need suggestions. I%26#39;m from England and I%26#39;m getting married next year and we would love to go to New York for our honeymoon, we%26#39;ve both been before but would like to go together. We%26#39;re being a bit greedy really as we%26#39;re looking to take 3 weeks away and looking to spend say 5 nights in NYC. This is where i need the suggestions, where could you suggest flying to from there? As we%26#39;ll have lived it up in NYC eating, drinking and sightseeing we%26#39;d like to go somwhere beachy afterwards to chill out after the wedding etc... A few people have suggested Florida Keys but its never really appealed to me, don%26#39;t know why as i%26#39;m sure its lovely but ideally we%26#39;d like to go somewhere other than America. How long would it take to go to the Carribean or somewhere like that? I%26#39;m rubbish at Geography so not sure where is near.
Sorry for the rambling.
Hope to hear form someone soon.
xx
New York then Where?
A lot depends on what time of year, what kinds of places you like, and of course what your budget is. One of my most memorable trips was on a yacht in the Caribbean, sailing through the British Virgin Islands (much nicer than the U.S. Virgins, imho). In particular, Virgin Gorda was spectacular. Chartering a yacht isn%26#39;t as expensive as you might think, either.
New York then Where?
Bash,
First, get a good map.
Are you interested in cities, or National Parks?
Will you be flying or driving?
The Carribean is 3 - 4 hours from the NYC are by plane.
If you want beach, try San Diego CA, or the west coast of Floriday, such as Naples or Tampa/St. Pete.
Most people I know say the first stop in the islands is St Thomas, followed by Barbados.
It would help to know what time of year you%26#39;re coming. The Caribbean has hurricane season and rainy season etc. Bermuda is now very easy to get to from NYC (look on kayak.com for flights/airlines) and it%26#39;s a favored honeymoon locale, but I don%26#39;t think I%26#39;d like to spend 2 weeks there. It would be great for 5-7 days though, I think, again, depending on what month since it%26#39;s not as far south as the Caribbean.
There are many different parts of the Keys, so while I might understand your not liking the idea of say Key West (which imo is fun for a few days), you might quite enjoy spending 2 weeks exploring the various islands in the Keys. In fact, it%26#39;s one of the few places I would think would be both relaxing and interesting enough, (assuming you do rent a car and drive) to spend 2 weeks.
Mexico is another option for beaches as is South America. Anguilla is a very popular beach destination for NYers as is St. Barthe%26#39;s (very pricey and French).
Wunderground.com is a website that will give you historic weather (temps and rainfall) for any place around the world on their trip planner on the bottom right of the page.
You%26#39;ll also want to take into account when you will be in North America. Jan-Apr is crowded and expensive in Florida and the Caribbean, but the summer would be great for the Caribbean (not Florida, though).
Give a time frame and you might get better responses.
2 suggestions, depending on your travel style...
1) St Barth (aks St Barthelemy, St Barts) - gorgeous tiny Caribbean island. Very French. Very safe. Very casual chic. Probably best food and most gorgeous beaches in the Caribbean. 4.5 hour flight from NY to St Maarten and change planes there for small plane to St Barth. If this interests you, I can provide you with some hotel suggestions.
2) Belize. Completely different type of vacation, unless you opt for one of the Francis Ford Coppola type resorts. You can do beach at Ambergris or Caye Caulker (or one of the private island resorts), then inland for Mayan ruins, cave tubing, etc. There%26#39;s a really cool looking spa resort near Belize City (you dont want to stay in the city unless flights make it necessary) called Maruba that is honeymoon worthy. If you want a moderate priced, small jungle lodge that arranges tours for you, check out mopanriverresort.com
forgot to add Belize is a 4 hour non-stop flight from NYC (Continental via Newark on Saturday) or longer if you route through Houston.
