I will be in NY for 4 nights and 5 days in december. I was browsing the internet and came across this tour where they take you down to washington dc for the day and back for $135 per person. Have anyone tried this b4? I would love to get the chance to visit the capitol since I don%26#39;t get to travel often and so was wondering what do you guys think?
is the Washington DC Day Tour worth it?Washington is well worth a visit, but it will be a long day for sure. I am actually a little surprised at a ';day trip';. By car it%26#39;s 4.5 hours one way, with decent traffic. Assume this is via bus? You might consider the train. Amtrak out of Penn Station will take you right to the heart of DC in 2.5-3 hours. It will cost a wee more, but the time (and hassle factor) makes the bit more $ well worth it.
is the Washington DC Day Tour worth it?If I take the amtrak then I have to haul a taxi to get to the capitol and memorial wall area?
You will arrive at Union station, which is very close to he Capitol building and connects with the very clean, very safe, very efficient DC subway. You can get to all the ';major'; spots easily. You%26#39;ll be surprised at how close so many things are. I say go to the Capitol and then walk down ';The Mall.';
Not really. You can walk from Union Station to the Capitol and
then walk along the mall to the memorial with a few stopoffs
at the Smithsonian.
Go to the official Wash DC tourist website: http://www.washington.org
But be careful... you might want to spend more than one day there! If it%26#39;s not too late to adjust your itinerary, maybe you could take train to DC, spend the night, and then fly back to Big-D from DC.
Is it possible to just go there for a day? I mean let say I leave new york at 7 am and get there around 11 and just spend the day there and leave around 6 or 7 and go back to new york by subway? I want to save the flight money to catch a show. What do you guys think? Thanks
Depending on what time you are leaving, Amtrak fares can be reasonable. I am going from NY to DC in a few weeks and paying $67 one way for the train, which takes (allegedly) 3 hours and 15 minutes to get there. Check Amtrak%26#39;s website for schedules and fares. A trip to DC would be worth it if you could get an early train down and a late train back. I wouldnt recommend driving or taking a bus for a one day trip. At least on the train you can walk around, have more room, etc.

You can do it, but personally I would not. It%26#39;s just not enough time there to do anything.
If you%26#39;re looking for a nice day trip I%26#39;d recommend Philadelphia which is only 2 hours away (by car, bus or train), is highly walkable, charming and imensely historic (many 18th century buildings are still there and open)
Hi, I live right outside DC and you can do it in a day! but 1) if you are looking to visit the many museums along the mall they are massive and hours could fly by without realizing it and 2) it would likely be very tiring because the blocks on the mall are loooong between the museums and monuments. You could cab into Georgetown for some time, that%26#39;s a cool area.
If you don%26#39;t care about really examining loads of museum stuff it%26#39;s a pretty city to walk around in, but do see the Archives for some really neat stuff. The Capitol website says ';The Capitol is open to the public for guided tours only, Monday through Saturday.'; You should come just for the Capitol and some of the monuments, it makes you feel very patriotic!
The train is probably a good idea to give you more time.
I%26#39;d be curious to hear more about the tour being offered for $135. As others have said, Washington makes for a very long 1 day trip and if they%26#39;re taking you by bus, hmmm, may not be too nice. You can take the Amtrak train yourself for around that price and then you could pick up a tour when you arrive in Washington. If you just want to have a look and don%26#39;t think you%26#39;ll get there any time soon, why not. Just be prepared to be exhausted.
One thought is to consider doing this on the end of your trip. Take the train to Washington. Do a tour. Stay in Washington overnight (will probably be cheaper than staying in NYC) and then fly back the following day to the airport in NYC where you%26#39;ll be leaving. There are 1 way plane fares that are about the same as the train. ;)
