Headed to the Statue of Liberty for the first run next Saturday a.m. Staying at 63rd and Broadway. Looked into taking the subway, but according to Hopstop it would involve a change of trains, and I am a little uncomfortable (perhaps wrongly, and I am happy to be advised otherwise) tooling around on the subway in the wee hours on a weekend with a child. Would a 7 a.m. taxi likely get us to Battery Park by 7:45, or is there traffic to consider? Are taxis likely to be roaming around that area? Thanks so much.
Early Saturday taxi to SOL?
You will find a taxi and there won%26#39;t be much traffic. According to hopstop.com it will cost about $16.50 and take 35 mins (vs. 40 on the subway). It looks like the reason for the subway transfer is work on the #1 line which would normally go all the way. If you did this on a weekday, there would be no change of trains.
You could also take a bus (M20). It will take just over an hour but will cost the same as the subway ($2/person), the bus stops right at Broadway %26amp; 63 st. and you%26#39;d get out at Battery Place %26amp; Little West St. (I think) ;)
Are you staying at the Empire hotel?
Early Saturday taxi to SOL?
Oh, thank you so much, NYWhiz. I really appreciate your response and am relieved to hear the particulars. Yes, staying at the Empire. Parts of it are still being refurb-ed. My understanding is that the rooms are small but the place is nice overall, and in a fabulous location. Now our only challenge is finding quick food early on a Sat. either near the hotel or at Battery Park.
Some of the rooms in that hotel evidently have amazing views of Central Park. Would be great if you could take some photos. There are none on the review page here. ;)
Why not get some muffins or bagels the night before and keep them in the room. The Whole Foods store in the basement of the Time Warner building at Columbus Circle has loads of things. Then all you need to find is some coffee etc. in the morning and not waste time. I%26#39;m sure there will be carts down near the ferry.
That%26#39;s a great suggestion re: the Whole Foods. Sleep deprivation has prevented me from thinking creatively, and I was fixated on the idea of having to procure food in the a.m. I am inept with a camera and we will probably be facing an air shaft in the room because we wanted two queen beds, which are not available in city-view rooms, which have two doubles. We may change our minds upon arrival, though, and I may oblige you with crappy pictures. Thank you again for your very substantial help.
