can someone please explain what people mean in trip reports when they say they asked the driver to take queensboro bridge from airport to manhattan? are there lots of different routes you can take? and would you have to ask driver to go this way specifically? from what i can gather you get better views this way is that correct?
queensboro bridge from jfk
The short answer is (1) there is no toll on the Queensborough Bridge, (2) the view is really good and (3) it%26#39;s the closest free crossing into Manhattan to midtown.
The long answer is, there are at least 20 crossings between Manhattan and the land mass called Long Island (on which Queens and Brooklyn are two counties (or boroughs), yet part of NYC) that transport cars, pedetrians/cyclists, subway trains and railroad trains, either over the water or underground. Some are free, some have tolls. Some cross at the north end of Manhattan, some at the middle and some at the south end.
To select the crossing that is right for you, find your hotel on a map which shows bridges and tunnels. Also, read about toll and free crossings here:

great thanks for that - we%26#39;re staying in RCA so i reckon taking queensboro bridge would be a straightforward route for us, wouldnt it? would love to see the skyline on our journey in
One slight correction -- when QB counted 20 crossings, she was also adding on the bridges and tunnels to the Bronx, which is the mainland. You would not use any of them to go to the airports.
Since the Queensboro/59 Street bridge has no toll, many times is is very crowded, therefore you can lose time taking it and time stopped or going slow in a taxi adds to the fare. Although you can tell the taxi driver the route you want to take, listen to what he says about heavy traffic.
Oops - oh, yeah. That%26#39;s what I meant. {:o]
Meanwhile, Lotus is late with the Simon %26amp; Garfunkel references. Maybe he%26#39;s not feelin%26#39; too groovy?
thank you very much for all your replies!
