I once took a bus from New Jersey to Port Authority and, just before the Lincoln Tunnel, it went next to the river for a few minutes for fantastic views of the NYC skyline.
I want to go there to take some photographs but I don%26#39;t know the name of the area (perhaps Weehawken?) or how to get there from Manhattant by bus (I don%26#39;t remember which bus I took that time).
Also, can someone recommend a nice restaurant in the area. I%26#39;m planning to go with the wife, shoot some photographs and then have dinner.
Finally, can I setup a tripod there? It is my understanding that you cannot use a tripod in NYC without a permit.
Thanks for the help.

Skyline view coming from NJ
You can take the PATH train to Hoboken (www.panynj.gov/path) and go to one of the waterfront parks. The view of Manhattan is awesome. I don%26#39;t think you would have a problem setting up a tripod in one of the parks. There are many good restaurants in Hoboken. Here are 2 with NYC views--3 Forty Grill (www.3fortygrill.com) and Trinity (www.hobokentrinity.com). To learn more about Hoboken --- www.hoboken411.com
There is a ferry to Weehawken from Manhattan. Many people like the restaurant Arthur%26#39;s Landing for its views of Manhattan.

Yeah, that is a great view from the helix to go down to the Lincoln Tunnel.
That area is Weehawken.
Coming from Manhattan you%26#39;ll need to find a local bus that will let you get out close to that area. All the NJ Transit bus pass there but you need to find one that will let you get off near there.
Or you might want to take the NY Waterway (www.nywaterway.com) ferry over and walk.
That area is close to one of the stops for the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail (www.mylightrail.com)
There are buses from Port Authority that go to Boulevard East in West New York and Weehawken that would be relatively inexpensive and there are the views you remember. However, if you want to combine the trip with a meal with a view, I think the nywaterway.com ferry from 39th st. %26amp; the Hudson over to Port Imperial Weehawken is the best idea and then you can eat at Arthur%26#39;s Landing. There%26#39;s a shuttle bus from the NJ pier that takes you there.

You will also note NYwaterway has other ferries to other stops in New Jersey further south.
There are also great views of the skyline from the other side of Manhattan across the East River. The River Cafe in Brooklyn is known for it%26#39;s great views of the city and very good food (better than Arthur%26#39;s Landing) and there%26#39;s a restaurant called Water%26#39;s Edge in Queens that%26#39;s across from midtown.
