Help with area

Hello

I%26#39;m thinking of booking into a hotel on Upper West side @ 107th st. Could a local advise me on wether its a good location to base ourselves(2) for sightseeing and meals, bars etc. Also my wife is worried about travel in and around New York, I have tried to tell her its quite safe on the subways, I hope I%26#39;m right!!.

Any tips much appreciated

Thankyou

While the subway is safe, 107th Street is awfully far up. What hotel is there on 107th Street?

The first thing you need to do is look at reviews and PHOTOS from ';candid travelers photos'; of any hotel you%26#39;re considering. The only place I can find on west 107th st. is the Morningside Inn. Reviews go from fine to awful, not a good sign. When there are such divergent reviews, something%26#39;s got to be wrong.

Above 100 st., some blocks are fine and others may not be so there%26#39;s no way to generalize. There%26#39;s a hostel on Amsterdam and 103 st. that%26#39;s considered good and that location is ok although not as central as others.

The Newton Hotel is on 96 st. near a subway stop and considered a good budget option. What are your dates and your budget and what place did you want to book?

Thanks, and yes it was Morningside Inn. I dont like the look of the reviews so will steer clear. Was recommended actually, but by 3 blokes who went on a boozy weekend. I have a contact who has offered me a studio in Woodside, Queens. Is this far out of the city? I%26#39;m not sure of budget, didnt really want to go over $200 pn but it seems we have to share facilities which my wife wont!!

I would rather spend on goodies than a hotel room, but is commuting from Queens an option? Also it it a safe area?

Many thanks

a ';contact';? What kind of ';contact';?

Have you been paying attention to the scams in apartment rentals????

If you%26#39;re absolutely sure the apt. is legitimate, go to hopstop.com and put in the address as your start point and Times Square (or Rockefeller Center or wherevery you want to go) as the destination and you%26#39;ll see how long it takes. Woodside is not that far, but it%26#39;s not where I would chose to stay if visiting Manhattan. $200/night is not unreasonable so if you can %26#39;t find a hotel for that, it sounds like you%26#39;re either coming very soon and everything is booked or at an expensive time, maybe beginning of Dec.? What are your dates and are they flexible?

Judging from the reviews and my own experience the Mariott

products near Times Square would be the best for your price

range. The Courtyard Times Square or Residence Times Square

are well located as a base for all that you want to do.

Yes, all the Mariotts%26#39;s are very nice and centrally located for sightseeing - in Queens you can see the %26#39;ruins%26#39; of the World%26#39;s Fair, Shea Stadium plus the US Tennis Center, but most tourists want to see the ESB, SOL, TOTR and all those somewhat more popular attractions.

Stay in midtown.

Trying to save a buck (pound) on a dubious apartment (flat) rental could turn to financial shock when you realize you%26#39;ve rented a room in a vacant lot.

Are you asking is Queens, in general, safe? I reckon it is as safe as any big city in the UK - you%26#39;ve got to keep your wits about you - like anywhere else.

Just a note to anyone who is asking if NYC, in general, is safe - YES it is - I%26#39;ve been there many times and never have been attacked, maimed or worse, shot; if you are getting information that the City is a festering cesspool of crime from some cop show, you have to stop watching the telly, PLEASE.

Look at the Newton Hotel which is also on the Upper West Side but much better.

The Newton Hotel is on the Upper West Side on Broadway and 95th Street. It gets good reviews, especially for value. It is in a safe residential neighborhood with close by shops and good moderately priced restaurants. It is one block from the subway which can get you to midtown in 10 minutes and most anywhere in Manhattan in 30 minutes.

Hi! I work in Woodside, Queens. Depending upon where in Woodside you are very close to the subway and can be in Manhattan in 15 minutes. If the apartment is legit then go for it. It would be a tremendous saving. If you have an address post it--or email it to me through TA and I%26#39;ll let you know what the subway situation is.
