Gramercy Tav-lunch or late afternoon?

A friend has told me the best time in Gramercy is a long lunch in the tavern area.

What do you think? Best to do lunch or is early dinner (5ish?) an option? We would rather do later than the lunch, but I%26#39;d like to be sure we can get in....
