Good inexpensive restaurants on the East Side of Manhattan

i am looking for good inexpensive restaurants - atmosphere not important in Manhattan, between 68th and 86th streets, between 2nd avenue and Madison. Takeout places are fine. We will be staying in a relatives apartment for a week, but the kitchen is too small for cooking.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Please use menupages.com - gives information on restaurants by area.

Have you asked your relatives where they would suggest you eat, shop?

That could be some helpful information.

Further to what Poppa said, some general info to help you:

%26gt;most coffee shops are relatively inexpensive and serve a wide variety of food and are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. So as you look at menupages (either click on the map of ';upper east side'; or by 10 block sections-east 70%26#39;s, east 80%26#39;s etc.) checking coffee shops %26amp; diners and finding the ones rated the best is one good idea.

%26gt;restaurants around Madison Ave. in general are more expensive (b/c rent is higher) than if you go further east to Lexington, 3rd, 2nd, 1st aves.

%26gt;many restaurants do takeout and also deliver! Menupages has a feature where you can get a list of delivery places. Even if you don%26#39;t want it delivered, you can do takeout from any place that delivers.

Here%26#39;s a fairly recent thread from chowhound on good places for delivery/takeout on the UES

Some of the places I know:

Chirping Chicken is a small chain of takeout places that does not only good chicken but other things.

JG Melon is a pubby place that%26#39;s known for their burgers. Very crowded, not fancy, only take cash.

Brasserie Julien does an early prix fixe dinner (there are a number of places that do that.)

Vivolo is a very nice Italian that has good value prix fixe (but attracts all the seniors in the neighborhood ;)

A few other thoughts ;)

Grace%26#39;s Market does very good prepared food to take away. Not cheap, but good. Citarella is another good take away gourmet shop.

H %26amp; H bagels are famous and they have a location at 2 nd ave. b/w 80-81 st. Sable%26#39;s also has very good bagels and is known for their smoked fish.
