Tavern on the Green

Hello All:

5 middle age ladies are coming to New York for a visit from Thursday - Sunday. We have reservations for Jersey Boys but that is about it. One would like to eat at Tavern on the Green. Is there a better time to plan to go there and any safety issues that we need to be aware of? Thanks!

Tavern on the Green

Safety? No issues.

Central Park, more specifically, the Central Park Precinct, is the safest in NYC.

I%26#39;m not sure where you%26#39;re from in KY, but I can assure you that NYC as a whole is likely safer than any city in your area.

In the latest FBI crime stats, NYC was listed as one of the top 10 safest cities in America. Among the LEAST safe:

- Detroit

- D.C.

- Baltimore

- Memphis

- Dallas

- Columbus, OH

- Philly

- Nashville

- Milwaukee

- Houston

Now, that being said, let%26#39;s get to the heart of your question. Tavern on the Green is overpriced, overly touristy, and, in my opinion, a waste of your money. You will find the same opinion from many others here.

A better option in Central Park is the Boathouse.

And there are literally thousands of nicer options in NYC than TOTG.

Go for a drink, check it out, but don%26#39;t waste your money on a meal there.

Above all, I wish you a wonderful trip and thank you for visiting our very fine little corner of the world!

Tavern on the Green

i was @ TOTG years ago for brother%26#39;s wedding;most TA posters suggest go for drinks, not meal. As in any large city, keep your wits about you,don%26#39;t flash wads of cash,or jewelry. It%26#39;s well lit, well populated(call the restaurant and talk to them if you have concerns about getting to n fro).

there are wonderful eateries all around theater district if you have time constraints

look @ ';sticky'; for frequently asked questions for newcomers;also check out menupages.com

If you want to go to TOTG, go for lunch or brunch when it%26#39;s not as expensive. It%26#39;s something everyone should probably do once. Have a read here

I also agree though the Boat House is very nice.

Hi Bemor,

I%26#39;ll just add that if you live anywhere near Cincinnati, you%26#39;ll feel much much safer in NYC!

Have a great trip!

Your friend is traveling all the way from Kentucky....do the TOTG ladies lunch for her! Who cares if it%26#39;s awful (and it won%26#39;t be, it just won%26#39;t be worth the money)....you can go back to KY and tell everyone what a rip off it was (just don%26#39;t let your friend hear you...she%26#39;ll feel guilty for dragging you there). Boat House is nice...but Tavern on the Green is worth ONE visit!

Lunch is the best bet. The food isn%26#39;t spectacular, but it%26#39;s not bad either. No need to worry about safety.

Do a light lunch and go for the ambience of being in Central

Park during the day. It will be nothing like Kentucky and give

a sense of NY glitz as it was years ago. How bad can a BLT be as

you gaze at the beginning of Fall in Central Park.?Save your money for some of the fine dining that people on this sight know so well, but nothing will give you the emotional memory of an afternoon having a bite and soft drink in CP, IMO.

Here is another restaurant that is very New York, has better food and is not any more expensive than Tavern on the Green. It happens to be very near TOTG (two minute walk). I suggest you eat at Cafe des Artistes and then go across the street to TOTG and have a drink. Her is the cafe%26#39;s website and if you decide to go make a reservation a soon as you decide.

i like that idea, nyc! nice afternoon for everyone and better value.

Thanks to all of you for your advice. We are going to plan to go have the drink there as most of you suggested and eat elsewhere. I%26#39;m so excited about our trip to your wonderful city!
