One Day in NYC with some shopping and other things

My sister in law and myself had promised our daughters we would go to NYC for their birthdays this year - they have end of June birthdays a day apart. My daughter has been to NYC many times but my neice had only been once to see a show and a few sights in Midtown. We decided just to do a day since everybody%26#39;s schedules are so hectic.

WE took the 7:38 from Trenton and arrived in Penn Station around 8:45 - went directly into the subway and purchased our one day metro cards - off we go to WTC. This is the first time my neice had been there. It is still emotional everytime my daughter and I visit. I wasn%26#39;t sure what I thought about the men in the area trying to sell books on 9/11 - are they out to make a profit for themselves off of this tragic day so I didn%26#39;t purchase any. Over to Century 21 (yes we are also looking for homecoming dresses) - my daughter found a really cute dress for the low price of $21.97.....we told her that even if she did find something later a girl can never have too many dresses and she can use it for another occasion - at that price you cannot go wrong. We found some really great buys in C21 - off we go with our puchases uptown and got off the subway at Washinton Square - this is where we got a little lost. I had mapped out a few streets that we thought would be fun from the experts on this website. Of course we ended up going in the complete opposite direction so our plans were kind of thrown off. We finally found Bleeker Street and walked a little on Bleeker and finally ended up right around Union Square. Had lunch at Chat and Chew - SIL and myself had the BLT - daughter had the teeny weenie mac and cheese which was still a generous portion and neice had fried chicken. All the food was really good and priced really well. Left with a little bit more energy - off we went to Loehmann%26#39;s Department Store - no dresses in this store- last time we found lots of bargains but not so this time. Back down in the subway to head to Macy%26#39;s......get to the juniors section and SIL and myself glad to see couches in the junior section so that we can rest our feet while the girls look at dresses ~ both girls were successful in this store in finding dresses (daughter found another one for $52.00 - still a good bargain). We also remembered to get our 11% visitors discount. We found all the employees in Macys to be so pleasant and very helpful - don%26#39;t know if that is the norm or not. Back on the subway up to Dylans Candy Bar which has become a favorite of my daughters - she is a big fan of the huge rice krispie treats while my neice opted for the snickers cupcake. Once again SIL and myself resting our tired feet.............so now we are going to head over to 5th Avenue to work our way down 5th.........oops we were a little off course and ended up in the opposite direction where the girls spied the Roosevelt Island Tram.......the girls wanted to definitely do this - so off we go - SIL is a little hesitant but we got on and since we already had our Metro card we didn%26#39;t need to pay for this. We rode over and then hopped off and got right back on same car - really beautiful going back with the view of the city. Back to the subway where we think we are heading back uptown only to find out that we are on our way into Queens - oops again - finally get back on track and got off at Central Park and start our walk down 5th Avenue to head to Top of The Rock. I loved TOTR - we had found 20% off coupons online and this was nice since it brought the price down to $14.00......get to the top and all I can say is WOW - the view is just spectacular - we happened to hit it just as the sun was setting which made it even more beautiful. Down the elevator and back out to street level only to find that the skies had opened up and it was now raining - well we weren%26#39;t prepared for this so we went back into Rock center and caught a subway got off at Bryant Park and decided that if it was still raining we were just calling it a day - after all SIL and my feet were both hurting............well it was still raining so back down we go and caught the subway into Penn Station in search of some food before we catch the train home. Grabbed a slice of pizza and the 7:13 train back to Trenton to make the hour drive home........

Once again we had a lovely time in NYC and we couldn%26#39;t have asked for better weather - and the people were just ever so helpful and friendly. My neice was a little dissapointed that she didn%26#39;t get to Time Square at night while it was all lit up - but there is always the next time. I definitely want to spend some more time wandering around the village on one of our next trips as this was a really fun area. Thanks again for all the recommendations and advice that I found so useful from this board!!
