New York Hotels
We have enjoyed the recently renovated Park Central Hotel int the mid-50s on 7th Avenue. It%26#39;s just a couple of blocks south of Central Park and across from Carnegie Hall.
You%26#39;ll see some negative posts, but it has been recently renovated, is reasonably priced, and very friendly. They also have a great concierge, Adam.
We also like Hotel Elysee on 54th between Madison and Park. A bit more expensive boutique hotel, but very nice.

Forgot to comment on airport.
We have only used LGA and have found no reason to change.
Flat rate taxis the way to go. Make sure they%26#39;re licensed, no gypsies.
There are DOZENS if not hundreds of ';nice, clean, comfortable hotels which are central to attractions.'; Since attractions are scattered all around town, WHICH attractions will make a difference. BUDGET will make a difference. SIZE of rooms/hotels will make a difference. So if you%26#39;d like to be more specific and tell us
who%26#39;s going (ie how many people to the room)
what kind of hotel you like (ie big/small, modern/traditional etc.)
where you%26#39;d like to go
how long you intend on staying
what your hotel budget is
we can be more helpful.
Assuming you%26#39;re coming from the UK, your only options at this point at JFK or Newark (EWR) and both are fine. They%26#39;re both about an hour from Manhattan.
Best transfers will depend on how many you are and where you%26#39;re staying. The one thing you should NOT do is use Super Shuttle, a shared van service that%26#39;s not well regarded but touted by many websites.
