We are trying to figure out which train to catch to head down to the ferry for the Statue and for Ellis Island.
We are staying at W 48th St. and from what I gather from the maps we can catch the 1 train @ W 42nd st. Can someone tell me if I am right? Wil we need to switch trains or will go all the way to the tip of the island?
Also we are wanting to head to Canal St in Chinatown, which train will we take to get there? Coming from the same avenue.
Any help would be great. We are having a great time, we got FREE Letterman tickets tonight it was really a great show! Thanks guys!

YOu can get the #1 train DOWNTOWN from 50th Street @ Broadway.
You have to be in one of the first 5 cars to exit at South Ferry.
From South Ferry get the ';R'; or ';W'; train at Whitehall St, across from the terminal, to Canal Street and you will be in the heart of Chinatown.
If you are using the #1 train on a WEEKDAY, follow as above.
If you are using the #1 train on a WEEKEND, it might not go ALL THE WAY to South Ferry, due to construction projects. Read signs and walk or take a shuttle bus from Chambers Street.
If you have web access - use www.hopstop.com
On a weekend, or if you just happen to be closer, you can take the R or W train from West 49th Street and Seventh Avenue to Whitehall Street station. The back end will bring you up next to the Custom House; walk around the front to Bowling Green and into Battery Park. The front end will put you on the street across from the Staten Island Ferry terminal; turn right and walk a block into the park.
The 1 has a Canal Street stop, as do the A/C/E trains, but they are NOT the same complex used by the N/R/Q/W/J/Z/6 trains. That latter complex at Canal Street is the main station for Chinatown.
