Anytime we travel to europe,we have to use a different adaptor plug to combine with an electrical appliance, ie hairdryer or mobile phone charger prior to inserting into socket. It is a two pronged adaptor plug. Would this be of any use in New york? Stephen.

The adapter is only useful if your electrical appliance is capable of running on 115VAC. If not, then you need a stepup transformer in addition to the adapter.

I think the adaptor for use in Europe has round pins, and the one you need for the USA is two prong flat pin. My mobile, camera chargers and laptop all work fine with the adaptors as they are dual voltage.
Usually when you buy a set, they are marked with what countries they are good for. If you dont currently have a full set of adaptor plugs, the Museum of Modern Art sells a really nice, aesthetically pleasing one - where they all plug in together to form a compact 2'; square cube. A little more expensive than the electronic store ones, but since it fits together you probably wont lose them.
You definitely use different plugs in the UK and Ireland than we use here. Your prongs are larger, and further apart.
