I am going to be visiting my family in Webster in a couple of weeks and am looking for restaurant advice. My family has its favorites in Webster that they have been going to for years and years but rarely ventures beyond the Webster area. While I am looking forward to the old favorites (who doesn%26#39;t like Jade Palace?), I was hoping to get my family to burst out of its shell and try something new. Since I haven%26#39;t lived in Webster since the early 80%26#39;s some help would be appreciated. What are the best, not to be missed, restaurants in the Rochester area? No chains. I am especially fond of Indian, Japanese and Ethiopian but would also consider any spectacular restaurant regardless of its cuisine style. I am looking for a restaurant that is a destination unto itself. I always used to make a point of going to Victor Grilling but sadly it is no more.
Restaurant Ideas
Good idea to get out of Webster to eat. Blech. with the exception of one great restaurant (Proietti%26#39;s) the selection is awful.
Here are some of my favorites:
Veneto%26#39;s
http://www.venetorestaurant.com/
They also have a new restaurant next door called The Social - it%26#39;s tapas (small plates).

You%26#39;ve got to hit Dinosaur Bar B Que

Or, my other favorite, Sticky Lips BBQ

Hit the Public Market FOR SURE if you%26#39;re here on a Saturday morning and stop into Rich Port for quesitos, and/or go next door to there for tacos at the booth called Monterey tacos, or go to Javas for a banana and nutella crepe. Of course the Empanada stand is still great too. It%26#39;s really an eating orgy not to be missed. (Oh and you can buy some fruit and veggies too. LOL)
We love Jine%26#39;s Park Ave for breakfast

Here is a link to a pretty good directory of restaurants (and a few reviews)

Restaurant Ideas
I just remembered another restaurant I like a lot, but it%26#39;s in a crappy location - The King and I in Henrietta. I think it%26#39;s the best Thai in the area.
Carmen is right, Proietti%26#39;s is the only good place in Webster. I agree with the other reccomendations too. But I%26#39;d like to add:
Philips European across from MCC is fabulous, even if you just go for the desserts and coffee.
Mex on Alexander has the best margaritas and great Mexican food.
Mario%26#39;s Via Abruzzi is now an Italian restaurant AND steakhouse. The steaks are really great.
I love the old school Italian mobster feel you get at Nick%26#39;s in Seabreeze. Food is pretty good too :)
Some really good mediteranian food at Oasis on Monroe Ave and also at Alexandria%26#39;s on East.
I also really love Brio on Monroe across from Pittsford Plaza.
Never been, but heard great things about Tastings at the Pittsford Wemans. Black and Blue and 2 Vine have also been highly recommended to me but I haven%26#39;t tried.
If you want to venture out from the city, Steamboat Landing in Canandaigua is excellent.
There is an Ethiopian place - Abyssinia on University, but I haven%26#39;t tried that yet.
I could go on and on - so many great restaurants in Rochester!! We usually avoid the chains because we are lucky to have such great choices.
Almost forgot about one of my other favorites, Simply Crepes on Shoen Place in Pittsford. All crepes on the menu, which might sound weird, but it is very good.
Carmen57,
Thanks for the tip about Sticky Lips.
I was getting tired of Dinosaur. I travel to Rochester 2x%26#39;s a year. Been eating at Dino for years and years.
Sticky Lips was a nice change of pace. You do need a car to get there. At 7:00, I was seated right away. They have all the various combinations that you%26#39;d expect on this menu.
Nice service. Good food (maybe even better than Dinosaur).
I%26#39;ll be back.
Thanks again.
You%26#39;re welcome! :)
I%26#39;ll be staying a Friday night at the Hyatt downtown. Can you walk to the public market from there? Where is it located? Anyone know how early it opens on Saturday mornings? Also, any suggestions for dinner on Friday that are walkable from the Hyatt, and is it safe to walk alone at night? I prefer ethnic food, fish or vegetarian. Thanks!

Walking from the Hyatt to the Public Market would be a long walk. I mapped it out at 1.2 miles, so I guess it is a matter of perspective...like if you are carrying groceries and depending on the weather... :)
According to a website I just looked at it opens at 5:00 AM.

I hope this helps and you have a great trip!
:)
OK, the public market is out. Is there anyplace for a good take-out breakfast or lunch by the Hyatt? A good coffee shop? I am going to be in the convention center but might be able to sneak out. Thanks!

Maybe Nettieple or Yankee Dave or Carmen (or one of the other natives) can help you with your Downtown Rochester questions...
I don%26#39;t get downtown as much anymore (probably only once a year now) but I do remember a place (I THINK it is still there) close to where you are staying. Unfortunately, I don%26#39;t know the name of it. It is on the other side of the street from where you are staying and across the river. It is in the downstairs of the first building there next to the river. In fact, it might even be called something with the word ';river'; in it! :)
We used to go there for breakfast/coffee, etc. You can eat in or take out. If you are coming while it is still nice out - there are (or used to be) some places where you could sit outside nearby. The Genesee River isn%26#39;t the prettiest river you will ever see, but on a good day it can be nice to sit out by it.
I wish I could be of more help.
Hope you enjoy your visit.
