Pizza and cupcakes!!!
I really like John%26#39;s on Bleecker Street. We make it a point to have a pizza there everytime we%26#39;re in town.
In regards to Magnolia%26#39;s cupcakes....not a big fan. They are decent but nothing worth noting in my opinion. To me, they were too sugary sweet but if you are wanting to go because it was on an episode of SATC, you should go just to see it.
As far as John%26#39;s pizza, I found this to be everything people said it would be. I thought it was fantastic pizza....so much that every time I come to NY, I go on my first day and eat there, bring back an extra pizza to my room for late night munchies and also go on my last day and pick up a pie for the ride home. I%26#39;ve been offered good money for one of those slices on the long ride home to SF!
I echo the sentiments about Magnolia%26#39;s cupcakes. Nothing special. Was in NYC this past weekend to visit friends and found my new favorite: from Eleni%26#39;s in Chelsea Market.....famous for their decorated cookies, but their cupcakes are YUMMY!
LOL just had to stop in again for the cupcakes and waited for half and hour just to get in the door!!
Again they were just as great as before!! We ate two there and took two each back to the room for later.
I cant believe that this place was voted the most overrated place in NYC!!!
Judging by the lines everytime i go and the childlike attitudes of the diehard regulars, this is the place to go for the sugary delights!!
I am never disappointed in the place or the product...the employees are always in a great mood and the cupcakes are always freshly made and OHHHHHH sooooooo goooood!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just another of a thousand or so fans who is willing to brave the elements to get my hands on these things!!!!!
I also wanted to try Johns, but had other places that we dined at....report coming up soon on my weekend in the city!!!!!!!!!
I agree, Magnolia is overrated. The actual cupcake is so-so, but the thick frosting can be a too much in one sitting. I had to eat half at a time. I don%26#39;t really like that you select your own cupcakes. When I was there this woman was touching one, and then changing her mind, touching another one, changing her mind again.
There were no queues though, it was night, about 8pm. The staff, nothing remarkable to say about them. Not rude, but not friendly.
hello happymeal!!
When I visited this time. there was a group of women directly in front of us who did just that...attempted to touch the products only with their hands. The young man (who is always VERY nice to us, as is all staff) who mans the door went right over, picked up the wax paper box and made them use the wax paper each time they touched the cupcakes!! He then reminded us, (we do each time) and the others behind us to NEVER touch the cupcakes barehanded. Another lady, before trying to get one of the flourless chocolate cakes (YUMMY) thought she would pick one out herself, so armed with two sheets of paper, took the top off the cake holder only to have the nice young man say ';I would be happy to get that for you'; then took the cover and asked her which one she wanted and boxed it for her.
As I said before, each time I have been there, (maybe its just that we are so excited and have a ear to ear smile on our face and talk to the workers) the staff is extremely nice to us.
Like in all social / customer service encounters, if you greet the workers with a smile and kind word, they in turn will be nice to you.
This is something that I noticed on this last weekend getting to NY and dealing with the many service workers we encountered....you get what you give!! Having been ';on the other side of the counter'; myself for years, I know the power of a smile and courteous behavior and in displaying it as a worker, you receive the same from your money spending guests!!
I will never have anything but good to say about Magnolia Bakery.....EVER!!!
I totally understand where you%26#39;re coming from, I also worked in retail in the past. I mentioned this a long time ago, but I found a really big difference between retail staff here and there. I have no idea how people are trained over there, but getting my first job at 16 working in a jewellery store it was hammered into us to always smile, greet the customer within so many seconds of them entering, etc. From my shopping experience here at home, I gather it%26#39;s pretty much the same for everyone because I get the exact same treatment that I would have given a customer. I know exactly what they%26#39;re going to do; non-business related greeting, smile, the works.
But I noticed things were slightly different in NY. The worst experience I had was in Bloomingdales, I waited at the counter with an armful of jeans and the sales staff stood there and continued their conversation about a TV show they saw the previous night and whether they were going to attend a meeting about 401ks.
With Magnolia Bakery, they definitely were not rude, I just didn%26#39;t pick up on any friendliness. It really did seem to me like it%26#39;s more a place where you go, you know what you want, pay and be on your way.
