Is it safe to travel to the bronx?

We will be in NYC this Christmas... Our first trip there. My son who is 10yrs old would love to go and see yankee stadium in the bronx. Is it safe to make our own way there or should we go as part of a tour? He would love to have his photo taken outside the stadium but I am made to believe that this area is not as welcoming as others.

Yankee Stadium is fine. Otherwise gazillions of fans wouldn%26#39;t go! It is incredibly easy to get there by subway.

True, the immediate area around the stadium isn%26#39;t the most scenic, but on game nights, it is worse than rush hour!

By the way, you might have more luck if you post this question on the New York City forum.

You can also read the FAQ ';sticky'; post at the top of the New York City forum. It includes posts on sightseeing and, at the bottom, collections of trip reports by recent travelers.

Since it will be in the off-season you won%26#39;t be surrounded by other fans when you go but they seem to still offer tours of the stadium at that time. But a day time subway ride up there is fine. And the exciting.

The Bronx is a wonderful place to visit and has a lot to offer. There is not much else to see in the area around the stadium and I would not suggest wandering off there. Even New Yorkers don%26#39;t often venture off beyond Yankee Stadium but the Zoo, the Botanical garden, Wave Hill gardens, and Arthur Avenue (Italian food) are all great things to see in the Bronx.

The Bronx has its problems, but the places a tourist would visit, like Yankee Stadium, Bronx Zoo, Botanical Garden, Arthur Ave are fine. The immediate surrounding areas may be a little gritty, but not dangerous. Around the Stadium are the courthouses, BX Museum of Arts, and a couple of restaurants/diners btwn 149th and 161st Sts. Enjoy your trip.

It is definitely safe. Many people make the Bronx out to be such a bad place, but many areas are perfectly fine. Of course, there are bad neighborhoods, but every state and town has it%26#39;s bad areas. True, the area surrounding yankee stadium is not the greatest place, but I%26#39;ve been there many times and my aunt works there and neither of us have ever witnessed anything violent. I%26#39;m born and raised in the Bronx and have never even seen a fist fight before. The worst things I have seen would just be people having attitudes with other people, and some unstable people asking for money or something, and those people on the train who occasionally feel the need to preach to everyone else. besides that it is totally safe and you should definitely go!

Michelej - We have traveled to Yankee Stadium several times and have found the area around the Stadium to be safe. We travel by car and always park in the adjoining parking garage. On game days it is swarming with fans; however, since you will be there in December the crowds will have definitely thinned out! Last July we bought tickets for a Stadium tour. Honestly, I had more fun doing that than going to the game the day before! We got to sit in the NYY dugout, walk on the field, sit in the press box and you will be able to visit the locker room as there will be no game scheduled : ) Now%26#39;s the time to go and see where history was made, as a new stadium is being built right across the street and is supposed to open in 2009, I believe. You can get more info about tickets on the New York Yankees MLB team site. I hope you have the chance to give your son a Christmas present he%26#39;ll always remember!
