I visited NYC in January and had a great time apart from the -15 temperatures ..... ;-) ..... I chose JAN as the price to fly from the UK was cheaper than normal and i do not think there are many conventions / events etc in JAN , therefore the hotels are a little cheaper.
Are there any other months that tend to be cheaper and quieter than other months. I heard November and January are quiet months, are there any others ?
Best / Quiet Months in NYC.Nov. is not really quiet or cheap at all. Beg. Nov is the NYC Marathon which fills hotels a year in advance and end Nov. is Thanksgiving.
Summer holiday weekends are surprisingly good times to come (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day). Everyone assumes holidays are pricey but locals clear out of town on the holidays and many tourists prefer going to beach spots. Aug. in general is also slow (but can also be very hot and humid). I think end of Aug. is particularly good. For the last few years it%26#39;s gotten cooler, kids are still in camp.
Best / Quiet Months in NYC.February is pretty quiet as well, besides Valentine%26#39;s Day, but the weather, if anything, is colder than January.
January is also great for sales and bargain hunting.
In order of least busy:
Feb except valentines day
Jan after the first
march until about the 15th
July except around the 4th unless the 4th is a wednesday
August (about the same as july)
March after the 15th, april, may
June
Nov
dec except a the week just before xmas
Sept
Oct - always the busiest month. sept and nov are almost as bad (good if you run a hotel)
Prices: So far this year rates are avering about $300, and during the busy months if you book last minute (ie less than one month in advance) usually what is left are the most expensive places and the worst places.
A good rule of thumb is the average temps. Mild temps have the best business, hot months less good, and the very cold part of winter the lowest rates and the city is least crowded.
