Thank you, New York

I had such a great time during my last visit to your MOST AWESOME city. I am buried at work with catch-up, and will get to my trip report and picture postings this weekend. Special thanks to all of you who showed up for the great get-together at St. Andrews - it was so wonderful to meet you all. I can%26#39;t wait to return, although it will have to be after tax season in April. I love New York!!

Thank you, New York

Hi Chissis

I am glad you are home safe and sound. Nice to have met you. I look forward to your report.

Thank you, New York

Sorry I couldn%26#39;t be there to meet you, maybe next time.

Looking forward to your report.

I hate when work gets in the way! It was great to get a chance to meet you, I%26#39;ll be on the lookout for your report.

I%26#39;ve always enjoyed reading about your trips so will be looking out for this.

24 hrs in NYC Trip Report OR new reading material for Ange!!

I can%26#39;t believe it%26#39;s been 3 weeks since I logged on to this site. I%26#39;ve missed so many good posts! I thought I would write a report of our recent 24 hour stay.

24 hrs in NYC Trip Report OR new reading material for Ange!!

We got to our hotel at 10:30am and were surprised that they actually honored our request for an early check in and didn’t charge us anything extra! We stayed at the Grand Hyatt at Grand Central. The location was great – I never knew there’s an entrance to the hotel within Grand Central Terminal. So what was nice was that we didn’t have to pay to have our luggage stored at the hotel. After waiting in the check in line for about 20 minutes, we checked right in, freshened up and hit the town. We stuck with our tradition of starting every trip off at the King Cole Bar. I written tons of reviews on it in my previous reports and nothing has changed. They are fantastic. The bartenders are tops and every drink is incredible. Our plan was to then hit the 7th Ave fair, move down to the Bleecker Street festival and then Hells Kitchen Flea Markets and then to lunch but when we came out of the KCB, it was pouring rain!! We were shocked! Before we left our house that morning, we checked weather.com and there was no mention of rain in the forecast at all. Everyone seemed a bit surprised. Of course, we had no umbrellas. So, quick change of plans and we went to the Gingerman instead. They really do have so many beers it was unbelievable. And they even had a good liquor selection. We tried some new beers and took one of their menus so we could plan a return! We tried to pick beers that we had never heard of or can’t find at home. We tried the Christoffel Blonde from the Netherlands, Paulaner Oktoberfest, Hacker-Pschorr Oktoberfest. At this point, I switched to my old stand by Makers and Matt tried a Belgium specialty brew – I think it was Chimay or something like that. The place was nice – really big wooden bar and big tables. It seemed really open and they did serve food although we didn’t have any. I bet this place gets crazy crowded at night.

By this time, the rain had slowed to a drizzle so we left with the intention of walking down to the Hells Kitchen market but as soon as we got outside – heavy rain again! So we bought two $4 umbrellas at a little corner souvenir store. We walked down to the flea market and it was all closed up – all the vendors had big sheets over everything and you really couldn’t shop. So from there, we decided to go straight to lunch. We went to Thai Select and it was probably the best lunch I’ve ever had in the city. I don’t think I ever want to eat lunch anywhere else ever again – yes, it was that good. We started out with two appetizers – Tod Mun (fried fish cakes %26amp; peanuts with a sweet dipping sauce) and Crab Croquette (pretty star-shaped wonton with crab and cheese inside.) This came with 5 different dips, each one hotter than the next. For our entrees, we had the Tamarind Duck and Chicken Pad Gra-Prow. The Duck was crispy and came with greens and bok-choy and had a sweet BBQ flavor sauce. The Gra-Prow came with basil leaves, sweet peppers, hot peppers, onions, green beans and carrots. Both dishes came with a steaming bowl of white rice. The Gra-Prow was really spicy. We wanted to try some of their sake martinis but the bartender is not in during lunch – only dinner. They said we could have beer or sake, just nothing that needed to be mixed. So we had the Hana Lychee Sake which was very good. It’s really sweet but it was one of the best I’ve had. Our total bill was $53 – not bad for all that food! The service was excellent and we noticed that they did a tremendous take-out business. By the time we were done, it was 3pm. We walked back up towards our hotel and as we were walking, the rain stopped – thankfully for good! As we got up to 47th street, we saw that the 7th ave street fair was open and teeming with visitors!! Yeah – time for shopping!!

We must have stopped and looked at every sunglasses and jewelry stand along the way! When we got up to where it ended, around 57th Street, we decided we better head back to the hotel and change out of our rainy clothes before meeting for dinner. So we walked back to the hotel and decided we got there early enough that we would pop into the hotel bar for a quick drink. That was the worst decision ever! The drinks were weak, expensive and the bar literally smelled. It was bad. I’ve never sucked down a drink so fast in my life. (NO COMMENTS PLEASE!!) It really did smell like a wet dog. It didn’t take us long to get changed and we decided to take a taxi down to the meet up at St. Andrews. What we didn’t realize was that we had the time all wrong and we arrived about 45 minutes early. So we went to the little restaurant next door because they had a cute little bar that looked right out on the street. It was called Saju and I think it was French-Vietnamese. They weren’t real crowded yet and the bartender was very nice. He reviewed the menu with us and made great cosmopolitans. We sampled quite a few and they were all delicious. From there we went to the meet up at St. Andrews. I had the Asparagus Soup and Matt had mashed potatoes and onion rings!! Yes, that was his dinner!! He was drinking beer there but I had a couple more cosmos and they were good. I didn’t even notice the huge bar when we walked in but I saw it on the way out and was impressed. They had a huge selection.

After dinner, we went to Rosy O’Grady’s for one more quick drink and then said our goodbyes. From there, Matt %26amp; I were on a mission to go back to the Gotham Bar %26amp; Grill. You might remember that we went there on our drink tour and couldn’t remember it. The minute we walked in we were both like “OH…I remember it now!” It was really crowded but there were two seats down at the far end of the bar so we quickly grabbed them. I h ad a blackberry bellini martini and matt had a Pimm’s Cup. The drinks weren’t bad, in fact they were pretty delicious but the whole place was so snotty and full of itself. The bartenders were rude and it was hard to get their attention. We had the one drink, vowed to never forget the place so we would never have to go back! After that, we stuck with our tradition of ending the night at Matt’s Grill. From there we took a taxi back to our hotel and crashed.

The next morning we met a friend that I had grown up with and her husband and two little kids for breakfast at the Skylight Diner in Chelsea. Breakfast was good and they had all the typical diner food. We said our goodbyes and left to get home in time for kickoff.

Don’t know when we’ll be back – probably not until 2008. It’s hard not coming every month anymore but college costs are outrageous!

24 hrs in NYC Trip Report OR new reading material for Ange!!

';but college costs are outrageous!'; Just remember that there is an end.

Sorry I did not get to see you this trip, maybe after the new year when you come back.

College costs indeed.

As always, a fun report.

';Because college costs are outrageous!'; Don%26#39;t I know it - daughter has only TWO more quarters until she graduates, and I%26#39;m going to do a big happy dance when she does! However, she does want a trip to NYC (with me) for a graduation present, so that makes me even happier! Enjoyed the report of your quick trip. You guys always have so much fun!

You never fail to disappoint and I was thrilled when I saw your post.

And as for college costs? I know what you mean, and we have a wedding on the go at the same time.Kids eh? ;-)

See you in DC.

The only good thing about the college costs is that it keeps my mind off of how much I miss my son. And we have another one going off to college next year. Sounds like I need a trip to NYC to get my mind off of it!

Well, whenever we go back I%26#39;ve got the next ';tour'; all planned out. Hopefully our trip will coincide with someone else%26#39;s and we can have some company.

Your reports always make my jaw drop. I%26#39;m such a lightweight.

Hopefully you can find a way to get back before %26#39;08. It%26#39;s always more fun when you%26#39;re around.

LOL by reading this last post it seems there is indeed a bit of competition for me and my wild alcoholic consumption!!

Cocktails at 11 am!!! my kind of people!!! I thought i was the only one who did that.......

Although i can consume for hours (in my college and early working days) we would go for days especially on vacations where we knew we would never see the people we came across at the different bars.

Yes, Weller, you, like me are in the PhD grads in the category of consumption and we defiantely have to meet to see who the last man/woman standing is!! I have been warned of your prowess at the bars, but have to say, no matter how much i drink, i can still function long after my party buds fall off one by one...... I have ALWAYS been the last one going in my bunch.

I don%26#39;t know if you seen other posts of mine or not, but we just may be relocating to the NYC area in a few months time, so I would be honored to do a drinking tour with you two.....I know for sure Michael will be a casualty along the way, but i will put up a good fight for the title of ';America%26#39;s Next Top Drinker, New York Cycle';...........

may the best drinker win!!

The only request that i have to make is along the bar path, you two have to hit a few of my fav gay bars...don%26#39;t know if you have experienced drinks from these bars, but all i will say is the average drinker is usually falling off their stools after a few of their drinks!

So what do you say, are you up for the challenge in the future? I love the fact that you know your way around town and know the best places......between the two of us......well, look out NY!!

hi buca - i would love to meet up on a future trip. I%26#39;m not going to advertise all my vices though!! So we may have to adopt a what happens in NYC stays in NYC policy!! I usually try to keep my reports as generic as possible!!

We have learned a lot about the city from our drink tour and got to go to a lot of places we wouldn%26#39;t have even thought to go to because of it. Next time we come back, I%26#39;ll post something so you can see if you%26#39;re going to be around. We only live 3 hours away so we used to be there at least one weekend a month, usually two. But....as I mentioned, college costs have changed our disposable income situation!! We also have to be careful planning a trip because we can%26#39;t really leave our younger son home alone - he%26#39;s old enough - but that%26#39;s the problem - I don%26#39;t want to come home and find out the entire high school senior class had a party at our house!

Our tours have taken us to all kinds of bars in just about every neighborhood, including Brooklyn and a couple in Queens. We are up for just about anything except if a place is just strictly a beer bar. That%26#39;s not my kind of place - I don%26#39;t prefer beer. I%26#39;ve been called a liquor snob by just about everyone but as I like to say, life is too short to drink the cheap stuff anymore! (Matt would completely disagree with me but that%26#39;s because he%26#39;s younger than me!)

Anyway, I%26#39;ve got a good list going for next time - just not sure when next time will be yet. I was planning to come back up after christmas but my son will be home from college so I think I might have to wait until January because I miss him!!

Bettina - I had never been to R O%26#39;Grady%26#39;s before but I have to say, Martin is quite the draw! I may have to go back next time!!

NYCGirl - sorry we missed you too. I%26#39;ll definitely let you know when we%26#39;re coming back. I feel another Blood Orange Punch calling our names!

Oh definately Weller, I too have a STRICT %26#39;dont ask, dont tell policy%26#39; regarding my bar hopping adventures. I too reveal very little, if anything at all not only on the forum, but in general.

I too feel the same......no beer bars (for amateurs) and I too only drink the top and above top shelf products.

Totally agree, life is too short to drink inferior products!! I learned that from working at some top tier restaurants where we would point out and sneer at those patrons who would order, say, a scotch and water. When asked if JWB or Chivas would be preferred, the person would say ';Whatever your well is'; ....EEEEWWWWWW YUCK!!!! I dont think a well brand has ever touched my lips!!! I get goosebumps just thinking about it!!

Alright, the challenge has been accepted!! Keep me updated about your future ventures into the city. Hopefully by Jan. we will be well settled in or near the city.

8 weeks to go, thanks for the recommendations!!

Only 8 weeks to go.... thank you everyone for the brilliant recommendations! Finally, I%26#39;ve got the air tickets and accommodation booked, only have to book for the football, basketball, a few shows and maybe a Woodbury Common visit. And some restaurants....

I%26#39;ve booked Greenwich Village home for the first 10 nights of our stay. Carla was already booked for the last 5 nights, so I contacted a few other places (well actually about 10) and they were all booked up too. Finally, I was able to make a booking at A Garden in Chelsea for the final 5 nights.

DH was hoping to go see the David Letterman show, but based on what I%26#39;ve read, I%26#39;m not sure that%26#39;s going to happen.

I%26#39;m starting to get excited :)

8 weeks to go, thanks for the recommendations!!

Gosh, I had forgotten about a Garden in Chelsea. That%26#39;s terrific. I hope you%26#39;ll get us details after your stay. I also think it will be fun to stay in 2 different neighborhoods. ;)

I don%26#39;t know why you feel you won%26#39;t get into Letterman. Have you read all the tips on the forum? If not, do a text search. Will you have a cell phone while here with a local number?

wedding

Hi Guys,

We are off to NY next week and whilst there fancy getting married.

Having read some of the posts Staten Island appeals, however can anyone tell me if I get the licence in Manhattan does this allow us to marry in Staten Island or do I have to get the licence from Staten Island ?

Thanks

Seve

You can get the licence at any of the Borough Halls and marry at a different one.

We did this by getting the licence in Manhattan and getting married at Brooklyn.

Congratulations! Let us know how it goes.

PS. Love how you %26#39;fancy getting married next week%26#39;!

There is only one City Clerk. His office has branches in all five boroughs -- but since it is all the same city, naturally the City Clerk%26#39;s office (and the Marriage Bureau is part of that) in any borough accepts anything done at any other borough.

Cheapest Time?

I was wondering what the cheapest time of year to see NYC is? I went a couple years ago in May and it was cheap and nice to visit ...any suggestions on time?

Cheapest Time?

May is now a pricey time. Well, NYC has become much more expensive in general, but July/August can be good, especially holiday weekends in summer-- a fact that always comes as a surprise to people. Jan-March/April is also more affordable. If you want to come before the end of the calendar year, the week before and leading up to Thanksgiving offers some occasional bargains and Dec. 17-29th can be ok.

  • After Per Se, where do we go?

Every December I am in charge of dining arrangements for our group of about 10-14 people. It%26#39;s difficult because we are a large group. We have dined at Alaine Ducasse, Daniel, Jean-George and last year the private dining room at Per Se. This year I would like to find a fabulous spot. Possibly downtown. Won%26#39;t rule out any location, though. I need something new and hot with top rated food and atmosphere. I need to wow them. We are sophisticated - not a touristy type group and we like to have fun. I%26#39;ve even considered a privately catered dinner in a cool location. James Beard House? I need help ... please!

    Thanks,

After Per Se, where do we go?

I%26#39;d go for the private, catered dinner - a lot of WOW factor there, I know I%26#39;d be impressed!

    Poppa

After Per Se, where do we go?

L鈥橝telier de Jo毛l Robuchon at the Four Seasons on E57 St.

    ';After Per Se, where do we go?';

    To your loan officer?

You%26#39;re right, but I laughed all the way to the ATM - I didn%26#39;t have to pay the check!

eleven madison park is getting a lot of buzz on foodie forums (chowhound, egullet, etc), and does a nice looking-tasting menu. we%26#39;re there this weekend so fingers crossed it%26#39;s great!

Gordon Ramsey is excellent.uptown in the London

Atelier de joel Robochun excellent choice-they may have a private room-although not downtown.Formal and fun at the same time.Table dining is much nicer than sitting at the bar.IMHO

Eleven Madison has a private room otherwise the food is good atmosphere ok,but does not compare to the other restaurants listed.

Bouley -in the private room will be amazing

Del Posto-Fun and upscale but does not compare with Per Se.Formal dining but the food is just ok not great.People do like it though.

    Ciprihani uptown-Fun and Formal

WD50-very informal with very creative chef. They have a private room. that is very nice.Obviously more casual but if you are foodies it will be great.

Scaleni fedelli-downtown,upscale formal Italian-they have a private room.

PM me if you have any questions

    Alinea - in Chicago

doesnt compare to Per Se, but I%26#39;m going back for the tour!

    Le Bernardin

Although I am a true american cuisine person who enjoys nothing more than a top quality and excellent prepared porterhouse, I will occasionally splurge and appreciate an exclusive fine dining experience.

That said, I would never patronize Per Se for a number of reasons. Regardless of the name and supposed genius behind it, the snotty attitude held by Keller just doesn%26#39;t justify the price. I worked with an excellent chef who was very familiar with him and had not a good word to say about his experiences with him. His assessment of Mr Keller was enough for me. Also, his take on his employees, particularily his front of house employees and his tipping policy doesn%26#39;t set well with me. His feeble attempt to %26#39;change%26#39; the tradition of tipping was laughable to say the least.

Although it did take two months to secure a reservation at Gordon Ramsey in the 45 seat dining room, it was well worth the wait and tremendous effort involved!! I attended on my birthday and a finer celebration I have not had.

Their meticulously prepared and presented product was superior, and although there were items on the 7 course menu we had that are ';fine dining basics';, he did manage to put an updated and unique twist on them.

The service was extremely professional and very well trained, and they offer a spectacular wine ';book';...the possibilities were endless!! The only thing that got to me was their policy of not being allowed to be even one minute late to your reservation time.

In speaking with the maitre%26#39;d, he didn%26#39;t say large groups were not possible, but instead didn%26#39;t encourage them either.

Look into it, if it is indeed possible for a large party, it is a great place!!

We will be dining at Amalia in The Dream Hotel on Saturday night as it is getting some good buzz now and will report back on our experience.

Tomsoc - here%26#39;s the Michelin 2007 starred-restaurant list for 2007. As you already know you will have to arrange for such a large group with a staff member.

    www.michelinguide.com/stars_nyc_07.html

Del Posto is downtown, in the ';meatpacking'; district and is a fabulous setting with truly great food - extremely deserving of its 2 stars from Michelin. They will be able to accomodate you.

Just so you know, down the street from Del Posto is CraftSteak, and across the street is Morimoto - both of which are possibilities.

I%26#39;m not sure that Bouley will be able to handle that large of a crowd - but worth a call because it%26#39;s one of the true real French places still around.

I%26#39;m a huge fan of both Le Bernardin and Eleven Madison Park - my personal choice would be EMP - beautiful rooms, great location across from Madison Square Park and one of the best chef%26#39;s currently working ion the city.

    Good luck in your search

    Walking Distances

Is it possible to be able to walk from Midtown all the way to Lower Manhattan to catch the Staten Island Ferry, or is this a really long walk?

My boyfriend and I are planning on walking everywhere when we are there, but is this unrealistic?

    Thanks.

    Walking Distances

You could walk from midtown to lower Manhattan. It would be a long walk, but then that%26#39;s relative.

Every 20 city blocks is a mile, so remember that when thinking about walking. Also the distance between avenues is much greater.

Think about Metro cards. Search them here on TA. I generally recommend a refillable card which can be shared.

By the end of the day you will be walking a lot anyway, I%26#39;d say don%26#39;t exhaust yourself and use our subways and busses. They%26#39;re easy to figure out and fast.

    Walking Distances

You can measure distances by using hopstop.com

Walk down B%26#39;way the whole way. Pretty interesting, a good corss sectin of Manahttan.

it is about a 4 mile walk from Times Square.

Hopstop estimates the distance at just under 4 miles and estimates an hour %26amp; 10 mins.

Last November we decided to get a cab from Central Park to Battery Park for the ferry to The Statue of Liberty. We then decided to walk back to Central Park where our hotel was . What a fantastic walk this was going through Little italy and China Town. Being the end of November we came across small Christmas markets selling crafts ect. which we would have missed if we had taken a cab back. Yes it is a long walk but if you take it slowly, stop and look at places of interest and call into a Starbucks for a drink on the way you will find it will be one of your best days in New York. During our five day trip we walked miles and saw so much more.We are returning to NY at the end of November and we will be walking everywhere again but at a slower pace. Walk and Enjoy. Have a great time. Tel

We walked from 49th street down to the flatiron building and back- that was a long walk and our feet could hardly move after. I would suggest walking most of the way and then getting the subway for parts of the way down. You%26#39;ll still see alot and it will be easier on your feet. We walked most everywhere but as a break took the subway in between. Besides it gets a little tiring to wait for the walk signs at the cross streets and make your way through the hoards of people walking on the sidewalk with you!

I was just concerned that the queues get really busy for the Staten Island Ferry and I read that the best time to go is first thing in the morning.

Is this correct? Saying that, we%26#39;ll have to drag ourselves out of bed and have breakfast first (it%26#39;ll be our first day so I hope we don%26#39;t have jetlag!), so it won%26#39;t be that early!!!

No, the Staten Island Ferry runs all day. It is a commuter ferry, (runs every 30 minutesall day, and once an hour midnight to 5 AM), so it is less crowded before and after rush hours. Try it at 11 AM or at dusk, or even late at night.

Sounds like you%26#39;re mixing up the STATEN ISLAND FERRY and the STATUE OF LIBERTY FERRY.

it is the STATUE OF LIBERTY FERRY that is requires early arrival and has long lines.

NYatheart, you must be thinking of the Circle Line ferry that goes to the Statue of Liberty, not the Staten Island Ferry that just goes past it.

Oh I must be getting them mixed up.

We just want to go on the ferry that takes you past so we can take some pictures. We don%26#39;t want to stop at the island and get off and go inside the statue.

    Which ferry do we need?

    Midtown central or midtown east?

I would like to know which area I should stay in for first visit to NY. I am trying to get good hotel deals off of hotwire and the only description of the hotel is midtown central, midtown east, and etc. The price difference isn%26#39;t much difference but I would like to be closer to all the attractions. Thanks

    Midtown central or midtown east?

What do you consider to be ';the attractions';?

New York City doesn%26#39;t have a designated tourist area, though the swamped Times Square comes close. Are you looking for subway access? Walking access? Restaurant access? Broadway access? Shopping access? And to which specific locations?

    Midtown central or midtown east?

You need a good guide book or any guidebook with a map - it will define the areas you have described.

As for being %26#39;near%26#39; all the attractions - NYC isn%26#39;t a theme park such as Disneyland, %26#39;all%26#39; the attractions are not in one concentrated area.

Manhattan, with its wonderful public transport system, makes it very easy to travel and see all the attractions that are scattered about the island.

    Poppa

Not much difference. I%26#39;ve stayed east (on Lexington and 50th) and central (42nd and Park Ave.) and had no trouble walking everywhere I wanted around mid-town in reasonable time. Mass transit is close by no matter where you stay. Not sure which attractions you mean, but they are spread out all over Manhattan anyway. You will be close enough to walk to everything in mid-town. Anything further downtown like WTC site, Statue of Liberty, Brooklyn Bridge, etc, will require subway, bus or taxi so it won%26#39;t matter where you choose to stay.

Pick the place you like the best with the best price and best reviews here on TA.

If you really want the expert opinions of the folks on here (not me, but the others that are duly noted as experts) list the hotels that you are considering and let them give you their thoughts. I have learned a lot about where to go and where not to go from this forum.

Whatever place you choose, you will have a great time in a great city. I%26#39;m counting down to Nov. 16 arrival!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry I should have been more specific. What I meant was walking distance to times square, rockefeller center and etc. This is going to be my first trip to new york city and would like to stay in manhattan and so what do you guess suggest?

I saw on hotwire a backage deal for around $700 airfare and hotel included, the millenium un plaza. What do you guys think about this hotel?

    ';Not much difference. I%26#39;ve stayed east (on Lexington and 50th) and central (42nd and Park Ave.) and had no trouble walking everywhere I wanted around mid-town in reasonable time.';

Sorry, but I have to point out that Lexington and Park Avenue are one block apart- there%26#39;s not much difference between East and ';Central'; there. Also, there%26#39;s really no such thing as Central Midtown. East and West are divided by 5th Avenue.

That said, the original poster won%26#39;t have much trouble walking anywhere. Tourists seem to flock to Times Square the first time they come here, then lose their fire after that. If you want to save time and money, I%26#39;d wager that you should probably just skip staying in Times Square altogether- especially if it (aka Midtown West) is more expensive.

Most people who live here avoid the area like the plague, and after a brief visit tonight, I%26#39;ll reinforce that. The glut of tourists, overpriced junk, and crowding is dreadful.

    Chloe,

In case you haven%26#39;t already, check out the traveller reviews on TA for this hotel. It has some good, recent reviews. tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g60763-d209382-鈥?/a>

In my experience, I have found better deals by booking hotels and airfare separately. Also, check airlines and hotels directly on their own websites. You get the same (or better) prices without any fees.

    Alice,

My mentions of the areas (central and east) were based on the terms stated from Hotwire. After further review of Hotwire%26#39;s maps, I see that the places that I have stayed were both classified as east. I will be more careful in the future.

Also, try to be a little less negative to this ';glut of tourists'; causing the dreadful crowding. We are tourists and are coming to visit a place where you live and see on a regular basis. For some, it will be a once in a lifetime experience. Let them (us) decide if Times Square (or anything else in the city) is great or dreadful. Your dislikes are not necessarily everyone else%26#39;s dislikes.

    ';Your dislikes are not necessarily everyone else%26#39;s dislikes.';

Exactly- which is why I%26#39;d appreciate being advised about how to avoid the most crowded, tourist-heavy areas in places I%26#39;m going to visit.

';Once in a lifetime'; trip or not, not everyone%26#39;s going to want to spend a good chunk of their time stuck in a crowd of hundreds of thousands of people bumping around in Times Square.

I think either location is fine, but not all hotels are. ;)Betterbidding.com has a list of hotwire hotels. If you make note of the amenity icons (business center, fitness, restaurants etc.) you can usually figure out the hotel. If you do that and then either look at the reviews of the 2 hotels or ask for opinions here, we can help. So, in order to figure out a hotwire hotel you need, area, star level and amenities, then check betterbidding list.

I think the Mill UN Plaza is a very good hotel. It%26#39;s one of the few with great views from most rooms. It%26#39;s got a somewhat unusual (for NYC) rooftop swimming pool (indoor). It%26#39;s only negative for some is it%26#39;s a bit further to walk to a subway stop or Fifth ave., but still doable and there are crosstown buses. When is your trip? Btw, I agree that very often you can get a better deal by booking yourself separately air and hotel.

Since everything is walkable or accesible by subway, bus or taxi, go with the better hotel deal.

Also, to gague walking distance, use hopstop.com or maps.google.com

You%26#39;re going to be walking a lot anyway, so not much diff, imho, bwn a quarter or a half mile to Rock Center because you%26#39;ll simply be closer or farther from other things, like say, the ESB.

Please help! never been to NYC!

    Hey all,

I am going to Hartsdale NY on October 10th....since I am so close, we will be going to NYC...I have a car rented but need to know what I should do about driving! I have heard that I shouldnt drive in NYC b/c its just too busy.

We want to go on to the Statue of Liberty, Times Square, and the Empire State Building...

Can anyone tell me which of these place I will be alright driving to....and if not, where to park, and can I get a taxi and how much?

Sorry for all the questions but I really need some info!!!

    Crystal

Please help! never been to NYC!

Park your car in Hartsdale and take the Harlem line MetroNorth into Manhattan. It%26#39;s only about a half hour on the train, and the ride ends in Grand Central. Take the subway or walk from there, depending on what you want to see first.

    Do not drive here.

Please help! never been to NYC!

Well, you can%26#39;t drive to the Statue of Liberty-also, it is not recommended to drive in NYC as public transportation is much more convenient.

    Poppa

Alice is right -- there is a MetroNorth station right there in Hartsdale, so why would you think of driving in rather than taking the commuter train?

If you wanted to drive into the city , you would still need to park the car in a garage and then use public transportation, bus or subway would be less expensive. If you go to www.hopstop.com it will tell you walking distances bus and train, it even tells you how much a cab will cost.

Here are parking garages and see if it is cost effective to drive or take public transportation to manhattan. I think it will depend how many people are in your party.

You can use the bus or train to get around. If you are driving from Rochester there is no big deal driving in New York City, it is just stop and go. I drive all the time. If it is just you I would park the car and use the train. More than 2 people you may want to consider driving.

    www.nycgarages.com

    www.Iconparking.com

    The Port Authority has parking

The parking garage sites gives you lists of locations and rates.

I was lucky last saturday, we found street parking and we paid with our credit card at the meter. I would NOT suggest ( using a meter) for the first experience, because it may take too much time to find a spot. You may get lucky to find one, it%26#39;s like a 6 hour meter. I would just find a lot, closest to one location , which ever one is cheaper.

If you are planning to come on a weekend it will not be so bad driving.

Sorry, The 10th is a wed. weigh out your options.

i know you cant drive to the statue of liberty....obviously...but you can drive to where you get on the ferry.

but thanks and if i can ride in right from hartsdale it would be great! how much will it cost to ride into NYC from hartsdale??

    Once again, thanks!

check out metro north info online for times and fares. don%26#39;t drive into the city....cost of parking will exceed your train fare by alot.

just wanted to make sure, it will cost about 30 bucks to ride in a taxi from the empire state building to liberty park?

According to HOPSTOP approximate taxi fare from Herald Sq/34St to Battery Park would be approximately $12.50 plus tip.

    First NYC Visit many questions?

Me and my girlfriend have booked a visit to NYC on 12th Jan 2007 for 5 nights staying in the Comfort Inn Manhattan, this is our first visit and we have some questions that we would be grateful if anybody could advise/answer for us?

Firstly January weather im expecting it to be cold but is it really that bad?

    Comfort Inn Manhattan any good?

Transportation between Newark airport and Comfort Inn whats the best way to get to hotel and again back to airport on return ? how long would it take and cost?

Best attractions for first time visitors aged 20, looking for shopping, sight seeing and good food (looking forward to chinatown)

Finally (for now) transportation in and around new york?

I hope any of you can help !

    First NYC Visit many questions?

    First NYC Visit many questions?

Christo, please refer to the thread started by %26#39;WanderlustEdinburgh%26#39;, I wrote a rather lengthy reply that may be of some help to you on your trip.

Also as was directed above, read the FAQ look before you post thread on the top of this page.

    Have a great trip!!

Double check that your hotel will allow you to rent a room, most places require that you be 21.

hey i went to nyc last oct for the first time with my lil sister shes 21 and im 24 so we are around the same ages.

woodbury common was great for shopping, u can get a bus from the port authority for about $30. its a good day out u will spend hours there.ur girlfriend will love it lol

this time around im planning to try jersey gardens which is supposed to be great.

century 21 is also good for shopping.

macys is worth a visit too.

for food there are hundreds of resteraunts so just stroll around and wen u get hungry ul never be far from sumwer to eat.

also vendors on the side of the roads sell hotdogs for a nibble when ur too busy shopping to stop and eat.lol

as for ur hotel u could type the name into the search bar and read the reviews.

one last thing i dont mean to put a dampner on ur holiday but drinking is over 21%26#39;s and they are quite strict when it comes to id.

anymore questions fel free to ask and i will try help.

    have a great trip

id suggest walking around the city as u will see more, u can buy a metro pass which works out cheap for using the subway.

taxi%26#39;s are everywhere, u cant miss them there bright yellow lol.

the taxi from newark to manhattan iv been told could cost up to $80 dollars including tips and tolls.

you could also get a train to penn station and taker a cab from there to ur hotel which would work out cheaper.

the weather in january is cold so id suggest gloves ,jackets, scarves etc.

some of this is from experience some is from questions i hav asked on here b4.

Cheers guys for the help and advice FAQ were very handy and gd place to start !! lol!

Bettina thank you for pointing that out it turns out all is ok as we booked through Virgin atlantic and they are a reputable firm so you would hope they know of such requirements any how I went direct to Comfort Inn and they only require that we are 19 or older!

I am sure I will call upon your advice again before my trip!

    Cheers

Stayed in the Comfort Inn 2 years ago, expect no frills in this hotel the rooms very basic %26amp; quite old fashioned. The free breakfast provided is a plus and the guy on reception was great. Location is fab, very central, Macys down the block, Empire State Building just around the corner.

    You%26#39;ll have a fantastic time!!

Returning to New York in 8 weeks time...can%26#39;t wait!!

  • Batali,

I think batali is the most over-rated chef in NYC.I do not care for any of his restaurants.definitely lives off of his reputation.

    Batali,

    Well said!

    I heartily second your opinion.

    Poppa

    Batali,

I%26#39;m glad you two have found each other - I was starting to feel sorry for poppa being the lone Batali-hater.

I would love to hear from both of you what your personal dining experiences were at each of the below ... don%26#39;t be shy - let%26#39;s hear the bitter truth about Batali%26#39;s food and restaurants...

    Babbo Ristorante e Enoteca

    Bar Jamon

    Casa Mono

    Del Posto

    Esca

    Lupa

    OTTO Enoteca Pizzeria

    The Spotted Pig

He seems to be a pompous a$$ on the Food Channel.

Since Mr Batali doesn%26#39;t actually cook in any of the restaurants mentioned I just wondered what the two posters I addressed had against the Executive Chefs who actually turn out the food.

If avoiding pompous as*e* in NYC were a criteria I%26#39;m afraid we would have to cancel all our visits to every top restaurant (except those of Danny Meyer), all designer label stores, all top jewelers, etc.

Good point, LTT. If what Bourdain says is true, it%26#39;s a requirement to be a talented chef.

I%26#39;m also curious to hear about the bad meal experiences. I%26#39;ve eaten at Babbo, Lupa, Bar Jamon, Casa Mono, and Otto, and the worst complaint I%26#39;ve heard is that the carbonara was a bit too salty.

I%26#39;ve always had good luck making Batali%26#39;s recipes at home, as well. They%26#39;re incredibly simple and have always turned out well.

Which celebrity chefs do you haters prefer?

Whatever you think of Batali the book Heat by Bill Buford about working in Batali%26#39;s kitchen is a great book. Just my book recommendation if people want to know more about Batali the person.

This hater prefers this guy who%26#39;s been around for a while. You might not know him, though. His name is Ronald McDonald and he looks a little different with his red hair and all. He makes the best french fries around. If you don%26#39;t like his food, then you don%26#39;t know good food.

And before I get blasted for this response, I AM JOKING!!!!!

Perhaps I should not be bashing Mr Batali - I%26#39;ve never met him, never eaten in one of his restaurants - my opinion is solely based on the way he presents himself on TV.

He may be a talented chef, it%26#39;s just his attitude that %26#39;bugs%26#39; me.

I guess I was just up for some Batali Bashing - and if his carbonara is too salty - that just adds fuel to the fire.

I do agree that MickeyD%26#39;s offers some the best fries around and I%26#39;m not kidding.

Hey, just going with the flow.

  • Sundays in NYC

This is probably a stupid question but what are the trading hours for the shops etc on sundays? I am coming in April flying on a saturday morning, get to JFK for lunch, so I don%26#39;t want to miss any valuable shopping time!!,I am only there for 3 nights . Any other tips welcome I always plan a long time in advance so I will constantly be asking questions for the next few months!

    Sundays in NYC

Most stores open on Sundays, you will be fine shopping wise. Unless you are into super high end stores, many of them close on Sundays. They are concentrated along Madison Ave from 60th to 80th St.

    Sundays in NYC

Just thought I%26#39;d add most stores open at 11-ish on a Sunday

Most clothing stores are generally open from noon to six or so on Sundays.

For anyone who's been to a Giants or Jets game...

I can get tickets in the Upper Bowl (Plaza Sideline - section 309, row 11) for $115 each, or in the Lower Corner (section 138, row 40) for $153 each.

My question is...section 138 is lower but under the overhang (no idea what that means!)...and is in the corner, so it will be great to see when the ball is in that end. But when in other end, the view won%26#39;t be that great.

Section 309 is up a lot higher, but it%26#39;s on the sideline which could mean better views throughout the whole game, just higher up and not as close as section 138.

Should I pay the extra $40 for the lower bowl? Will it be worth it? Or would we be fine with upper bowl tickets.

My BF has played football his whole life, ever since he was 9 years old, and has never seen an NFL game. I want to make sure he gets a good view, but I%26#39;m not sure he%26#39;ll get that in a corner.

Any advice from anyone who%26#39;s been to a game?

Here is the link to the floorplan, for anyone who wants to reference it.

    seatdata.com/html/鈥ick_section_nfl_jets.htm

If you click on the sections, it gives you a %26#39;rough view%26#39; of what the game will look like from your seats.

    Thanks!

For anyone who's been to a Giants or Jets game...

I have watched the Giants on TV for the past 27 years and when I walked into Giants Stadium for the first time about 8 years ago I was shocked at how small the stadium is and how much you are on top of the field.

I personally would not want to be in the corner, particularly for extra money. I think you are better off in the middle of the field and going higher.

Have fun and get there early!

For anyone who's been to a Giants or Jets game...

To be honest, they both have equal negatives.

Section 309 is a bit better but not much. Ideally you%26#39;ll want to be 310-312

Thanks for the advice! I was able to get tickets in section 312 for $115 each. You guys have been very helpful! :)

    Just another quick Q-

If the game starts at 1pm, what time is it likely to end? And if taking the bus, what time will we likely be getting back into Manhattan?

If the game starts at 1:00 look at it to be over around 4:00 - 4:30. I%26#39;m not sure how long it takes to get back to Manhattan.

One day stopover in NYC Dec 23rd - How to spend the day?

We (2 adults (50 ish), 2 teens, and one fit grandmother) are going on a S.Caribbean cruise just before Christmas and our flight home (using airline points) involves a one night stay (Dec 22nd) and a pretty full day (Dec 23rd) in NYC. W need to leave for the airport at 5pm.

I imagine Dec 23rd will be a pretty festive day to walk the streets of New York.

Seasoned NYC travellers or researchers, how would you spend the day?

One day stopover in NYC Dec 23rd - How to spend the day?

I%26#39;d mosey up to Central Park. Stroll on up to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Then find a good lunch at somewhere like Bistro 60. Not sure from your post where you are heading for on 12/23. Do you have a flight time?

One day stopover in NYC Dec 23rd - How to spend the day?

I have a question - what time do you arrive on the 22nd, because if you need to get to the airport by 5 on the 23rd you will have to leave the city around 2PM, so you don%26#39;t really have a lot of time.

    Where are you staying?

    Hi,

We are staying at the Embassy Suites near Brooklyn Bridge. We arrive about 7pm on the 22nd.

Flight to Vancouver is at 8pm on the 23rd.

I am sorry, I misread your post about when you are leaving for the airport.

I would get up very early and take the free Staten Island Ferry ride past the Statue of Liberty, will take about 1 hour.

I would then walk to the entrance of the Brooklyn Bridge near City Hall, walkable from your hotel, walk halfway and come back.

Grab the subway at Brooklyn Bridge, right across from the bridge, and head to 42nd Street Grand Central and have a look around.

Walk west on 42nd Street, take a quick peek into the main NY Library at 42nd %26amp; 5th. Walk 1 block west to Bryant Park and have look at the Xmas fair. Walk 1 more block west to 7th Avenue/Broadway and you will be in TImes Square. Walk north to 50th Street, make a right (east) and head to ROckefeller Center, where you will see the tree, the ice skating rink, and I would visit Top of the Rock observation deck for a great view of the city, and the stores displays on 5th Avenue.

Depending on your timing, the rest is up to you when to head back to your hotel.

    Have fun..

NYCGirl has a fantastic itinerary. I would definitely do that!

Wow, NYCgirl, thanks for the great itinerary. Just what we were looking for. We just need to find a nice spot for lunch and our day will be complete.

Be sure to pre-purchase your tickets. The tours sell out often.

Are you aware that Thursday, Nov.22 is Thanksgiving. Very few stores, if any, will be open. Friday, the 23rd, is the busiest shopping day of the year.

You might want to go to Macy%26#39;s Thanksgiving day parade on the 22nd. It runs from 9 AM to 12 PM.

    cheers rqf,

yes,we were aware that the 22nd was thanksgiving,we are staying at the wellington hotel on 7th ave and 55th street so hopefullly we will get a good view of the parade,

I will be staying at Millenium UN Plaza. TIA

Times square, Rockefeller Center, Central Park, Empire state building and St. Patrick%26#39;s church should be visited on the same day

Korea Town is on 32nd St. between 5th Ave. and Broadway, two or three miles north of Chinatown. You can do this on the day you visit the Empire State building.

    Big Onion Greenwich Village Tour

6 days to NY and I can%26#39;t wait!!!

I was in Manhattan in April and this time I%26#39;m taking my parents back with me (they%26#39;ve never been to the City) and we%26#39;ll be celebrating my birthday as well.

Last time I was in town I took the Chelsea Market foods of NY tour which was one of the highlights of my trip. I%26#39;d be very excited to do the Greenwich Village one next. However, there%26#39;s also a Big Onion tour of Greenwich Village and I was wondering if anyone has ever done that tour in particular and can provide some info as far as what the focus is (ie: literary? cultural? both?) and did you enjoy it?

Any thoughts would be HIGHLY appreciated!!!

    Thanks!

We got one that was really interesting and the tour talks about lots of things: architecture/anecdotes/history and so on. The downside was that we were too many people and you had to scramble to get up close to the tour guide. It is one of the best walking tours I did in the city.

    Please explain insurance

Can someone please explain these to me:

We are Australians wishing to hire a one way car. I went to the suggested web site but want to compare to Orbitz.

    This is Orbitz Insurance info:

Question: Do I need both these insurances? Does the Whizz site include both of these or just one?

I don%26#39;t quite understand the difference between the two?

    Collision Damage Waiver:

The Renter May Be Held Financially Responsible For Any

Damage To The Rental Vehicle- Regardless Of Fault. By

Purchasing The Ldw (Loss Damage Waiver) The Renter Can

Avoid Or Lower This Responsibility As Long As The Terms

Of The Rental Agreement Are Not Violated. Cost Of Ldw

Ranges From Usd 8.95 To Usd 14.99 Per Day Depending On

The Vehicle Type. Purchase Of Ldw Is Optional.

    Insurance:

Third Party Primary Liability Insurance Is Not Included

In Rental Rate. Supplemental Liability Insurance (Sli)

Is Offered For Renters Not Covered Through Personal Or

Business Liability Insurance. Cost Is Usd 12.99/Day.

Mexican Insurance Is Offered For Renters Traveling Into

Mexico. Cost Is Usd 25.00 Per Day.

    Thanks

    Please explain insurance

Many credit card companies will absorb the insurance fee on auto rentals - I suggest you check with your CC sponsor for more information on the intricacies of rental car insurance or with your insurance PROFESSIONAL.

    Poppa

    Please explain insurance

From what I understand, whizzcarrental includes ALL insurance. Here%26#39;s what their website says:

    ';What is Included

Rates will include unlimited mileage, liability cover for the minimum required by local law, coverage for the hired car subject to an excess deductible in most countries except USA where full cover is included ($100 liability in New York). All local/government taxes and airport fees are also included. In some countries the first additional driver is also included free.

    What is not Included

    Additional driver unless otherwise stated. Young driver supplement. Baby/toddler/child seat. Ski racks or snow chains. One way drop unless otherwise stated. Excess deductible. Fuel. Damage caused to tyres, wheels or glass and any damage caused wilfully or by neglect. ';

    Now I%26#39;m talking again. ;)

    Here%26#39;s what I THINK

CDW or collision damage waiver is for damage to the car

LDW or loss damage waiver is additional to the CDW if the car is stolen

Sli is liability coverage for any damage an accident you%26#39;re involved in causes to OTHER people or vehicles.

Many Americans would be covered for one or more of these (I honestly forget which one) either by their own auto insurance and/or by a credit card (and if it%26#39;s a credit card, you have to USE that credit card for rental in order for it to be effective!) , but often these coverages are only valid in your own country, not in another country. So first thing you need to do is find out what insurance you MIGHT have from those.

I did a general search online for an explanation of car rental insurance in the US and hit some good info on another forum. Here%26#39;s the similar question someone asks and the answers.

    http://tinyurl.com/2gqxx2

I think they are saying the same thing I am but they make a major point of the importance of LIABILITY insurance. So hearing that, I would ASK whizzcarrental what the liability coverage is. I find their parenthetical ($100 liability in NY) very confusing. Does that mean you only have $100 worth of liability ins. or does it mean you%26#39;re charged $100 in NY. I%26#39;d ask.

Also, another helpful piece of advice (ans. #4) is to look for prices on British or Australian websites for your rental as those will include the insurance you need and will often be cheaper than reserving on a US website and then adding the necessary insurance. Whizzcarrental is a UK website. I think part of what makes them so competitively priced is they provide insurance from a third party co. rather than thru the rental cos. but don%26#39;t quote me on that. ;)

Then you want to scroll down to read #148 under their FAQ

    http://tinyurl.com/oskcl

But I%26#39;m remembering you%26#39;re planning to see Niagara Falls on this trip and there may be even further issues bringing the car over the border.

Good luck and let us know how you make out.

Do you own a car in Australia, if so check with your insurance company.

also check with your credit card company if they cover any of these insusances, (I have an AMEX gold card and it covers them, we totaled a car a few years back and there was NO CHARGE at all)

MOST IMPORTANT: make sure that the coverage is valid in the USA in New York State, as some cards/insurers only some areas.

    Ok thanks for your help.

I will phone our CC company to ask about insurance. I know they cover us for liability insurance but I don%26#39;t know if that means liability on cars.

I wish they wouldn%26#39;t get so technical in all these legal documents.

Then assuming this does cover liability on damage caused by a car, I assume this still doesn%26#39;t actually cover the car repairs to the car itself. So I may just need CDW.

Crossing the border into Canada doesn%26#39;t seem to be an issue so long as you inform them of this. I have read about that one.

I%26#39;ll also send an email off to the Whizz people.

Ok, so our credit card only covers the ';excess'; on an insurance policy. Which is what the CDW means in the US I assume.

On reading the FAQ on the other web site about insurance I think we just need SLI - Liability Insurance which is not even quoted on the US car rental sites anyway.

Hmmm now whether to rent through a US Site or Australian Site?

I am going to call our car Insurance company here, but am fairly certain it wouldn%26#39;t cover us in the USA because we are insuring our car not people.

Auto insurance is one area where you%26#39;ll want to err on more rather than less.

The second an accident happens, especially if there are injuries, you are going to wish you had bought all the insurance you can.

The USA is very lawsuite happy.

Unless you get in writing from your insurance company what is and isn%26#39;t covered, I%26#39;d purchase the car company%26#39;s insurance.

    Don%26#39;t try to ';wing this';.

You know you are right but I am just trying to work out which is the best deal on hiring and whether I NEED this LDW.

After going to Thrifty web site and reading about it, I am even more confused. It says that LDW is NOT insurance. All I want to make sure is that the car is covered for repairs and also the liability damage is (which appears to be classed as SLI). That one seems clear.

But if LDW is not insurance then where do you get actual insurance on the vehicle and why is this not on the web sites? Am I missing the point?

    See LDW definition below:

You are absolutely liable for any loss or damage to the vehicle, even if someone else caused it or the cause is unknown, whether due to theft, fire, hail, flood, collision, vandalism, or any other cause, subject to limitations imposed by the law where the vehicle is rented.

However, in the U.S., if you purchase the optional LDW Plan, we will waive your responsibility for loss or damage to the vehicle in full or in part (depending on the LDW plan you accept). LDW is not insurance.

LDW does not apply if: (1) you use the vehicle in violation of the rental agreement; (2) you fail to remove the keys, or close and lock all windows, doors and trunk, and the vehicle is stolen or vandalized; (3) you fail to notify us and the police immediately after the loss; and (4) you fail to pay the charges under the rental agreement; or (5) as allowed by state law.

If you do not purchase LDW and the vehicle is lost or damaged, your liability will not exceed the full value of the vehicle, plus:

    Actual towing and storage charges;

    Loss of use;

    Diminution in value, regardless of whether the vehicle is repaired or not;

    All rental charges through the date you report the incident if not returnable or the return date, whichever is later;

    Any out-of-pocket expenses incurred by us as a result of the loss or damage to the vehicle;

    A reasonable administrative fee, and

Pro-rata license plate fees, all as allowed by law.

Before deciding whether to purchase LDW, you may wish to determine whether your own automobile insurance or credit card agreement provides you coverage for rental vehicle damage or loss and determine the amount of the deductible under your own insurance coverage. The purchase of LDW is not mandatory. LDW is not insurance.

By signing the rental agreement, you agree to pay us any amount not covered by any insurance, credit, or charge card or other coverage you may have. However, your responsibility will not exceed those damages expressly permitted by the applicable law.

I too am confused. I always thought LDW WAS insurance. However, I will tangent and leave all the technical stuff aside to offer a warning/reminder.

When you rent the car examine it carefully---especially if you will be held responsible for damage. Make sure every scratch and nick is notated on the form. Make sure you have a spare and all the necessary accessories. Make sure you have all your wheel covers, make sure the insurance/registration/inspection sticker is valid. ( I once rented a vehicle that had a sticker in the windshield for NYinspection, but had NJ plates!!--btw I rejected it and asked for another.)

Gee wouldn%26#39;t have thought to check the plates.

We are renting through Hertz %26amp; Thrifty but I am at the stage where I just don%26#39;t know what%26#39;s what.

So I will just wait and see when we actually go to pay for the car hire. I will do what you suggest and go over the car with a fine tooth comb for scratches etc.

I will just have to ask the question when we pick up the car that we want insurance on the vehicle not just other vehicles and property.

Surely there must be other Aussies out there who have had this issue? I wonder how I can find out from them what they did.

Im from Sydney, I booked a car thru expedia.com.au using National Car Rental the quote I got from expedia was in Aussie dollars which included all insurances in the expedia special rate, I had to pay upfront using my credit card, I paid about $65.97Au per day (8 day hire) for a compact car (5 adults, 3 large suitcases %26amp; 4 door aircon, auto, unlimited mileage, CDW,Theft Protection, Third Party Liability Insur. City/Airport Surcharge, Road Tax, VAT/Tax, Additional Liability Insu (ALI) for US %26amp; Canada.all included in this rate). This booking was for Sun 3rd June till Sun 10th Jun 07. We chose this car rental cos it was close to our accommodation on return to New York. The only extra we were charged for on top of what I had already prepaid was for 1) an additional driver $3USD per day, 2) Fuel Service Option $45USD (our son the additional driver suggested this cos trying to find a service station in Manhattan was not easy %26amp; it would have cost us this much to refill the car anyway). we were given a check-in voucher which listed any damage but you need to recheck yourself %26amp; reaffirm what you found %26amp; make sure they list it on the voucher (we didnt have a problem). So we ended up paying an extra USD78.24 in total only cos we added the additional driver %26amp; took the option of them refuelling the car plus sales tax. The one thing you really need to enquire about is what charges if any if you are returning the car to a different location/state, also if you are going into Canada. We were told that to pick the car from one place %26amp; dropping it off elsewhere was quite expensive unless you can get one that wants a car returned to its home base (not the place you picked up). Also some car co. charge extra if pick up is from an airport. Also our car was registered in Florida so I dont think it is a problem if you pick up from Manhattan like we did but maybe others may have a different opinion about this. Our travel insurance also covered for $4000.00AU excess or repair cost. Good Luck - just read carefully what is included in the price %26amp; no doubt some will say you can hire a car cheaper in US but I rather stick with well known companies %26amp; pay the extra if needs be. I thought the rate I was given was comparable to car hire here. Dont know where you are planning on driving to but I wish they had ETag it was a pain trying to find change to pay tolls %26amp; so many of them. Hope I answered or at least made you feel more comfortable about hiring a car in US, ps to hire GPS was about $15.00USD a day extra.

  • JFK to Pod Hotel

What is the best and most reasonable price way to get from JFK to the Pod Hotel on 51st Street. I hear the shuttles are bad.

    JFK to Pod Hotel

which do you want ';best'; or ';most reasonable price'; ?

you can%26#39;t have it both ways

    JFK to Pod Hotel

';Smartest'; option - taxi - $45.00 plus tip.

Convenient, no hassles, the way to go!

    Poppa

Best as in easiest is a taxi. $45 flat rate for up to 4 people. Tip 15-20%. There should be no toll since the 59th st. bridge is a good option to get to your hotel and it%26#39;s free.

Cheapest is AirTrain/subway $7/person. Not a bad option for you since the hotel isn%26#39;t far from the Lexington Ave. stop of the E train. If you can carry your bags up/down stairs and can handle walking a few blocks, you%26#39;d take the AirTrain at JFK to Sutphin Blvd in Queens and change to the E train into Manhattan. Get out at Lexington %26amp; 53 st. Hopstop.com will give you step by step instructions.

Your other option if the subway is not convenient is taking the Airport Express bus to Grand Central station ($15/person or $27 roundtrip) and taking a taxi or walk from there.

    http://www.nyairportservice.com/fares.html

This question gets asked plenty of times.

With the FAQ, why is it so difficult to figure what is best and/or least expensive for you?

Sorry broadway but I didn%26#39;t know that JFK to The Pod hotel was a question that was asked all the time. The Pod must be a huge hotel!

JFK to blah-blah-blah hotel gets asked ad nauseum on this message board

stick around for a month or two, and you%26#39;ll see

the FAQ is there for a reason, but it is useless if people don%26#39;t bother to take a look

bbgamer - if you search ';JFK transport to....[fill in blank of any hotel in Manhattan]'; - or even just the words ';JFK to hotel'; in the search box - you%26#39;ll get gazillions of previous threads and the search function will have an aneurysm.

In fact, sorry you didn%26#39;t know this, but it%26#39;s pretty much become a running joke that the act of buying a plane ticket to NYC erases any notion to search this forum about transportation from the area airports to one%26#39;s lodging.

Maybe, even if folks read those previous posts, people think that tranportation from an area airport to THEIR hotel in Manhattan will be different and more challenging than to other people%26#39;s hotels in Manhattan.

Or, maybe folks just feel awkward and all, not knowing a proper opening line, like at cocktail parties or charity fundraisers, or when you%26#39;re set up on a blind date. I mean, who knows if the other party likes sports or politics? But, on the other hand, ';how do you get from the airport to Manhattan?'; is a good neutral ice-breaker.

    Thanks for your understanding.

I took a look and I didn%26#39;t see The Pod. I thought The Pod was a little out of the way and was looking for a specific answer like someone saying how I might be able to get within a block or so. Just like others answered. I will not ask any more questions. Didn%26#39;t know that my questions had to be approved.

No, bbgamer. On the other hand, Manhattan is not exactly a huge island, and the vast majority of hotels are in a very small area -- the information for how to get from JFK to one hotel or another is going to be pretty much the same.

And of course, you DID go to the FAQ%26#39;s first, right?

I did go to FAQ first. If you notice I post alot on TA. I have never been to NYC and had a question how to get to a hotel that I thought was a little out of the way. I am sorry if I broke the protocol of NYC or if I didn%26#39;t understand how the city was laid out. I didn%26#39;t want to start my trip off by walking in areas that I didn%26#39;t know.

Subways made easy - thanks GreenWhiteBlue

We just got back from 5 days in NYC. I read the Idiot%26#39;s Guide to the Subway before we went. (See the Sticky) Thanks for all the great info. We went every where on the subway and never had any problems. We even figured out how to tell an express train from a local one.

    THANKS!!

Subways made easy - thanks GreenWhiteBlue

You are very welcome indeed -- and I hope that your experience is a reassurance to others that it ain%26#39;t that hard after all!

Subways made easy - thanks GreenWhiteBlue

I can second that, GWBs guide to the subway urged us to embrace this method of getting around. Not only was it superb at informing us of how to practically get around by highlighting the salient points, but more importantly like I say it encouraged us to do this and as such we feel we encountered a huge piece of New Yorkness which was unmissable. We loved the subway and its ambience, experiencing that was def one of the highlights of our NY trip, we became really confident at using the subway, so much so we considered ourselves subway veterans after only 6 days lol.

Thanks once more GWB as I read through it last night just to update myself and noticed that you had addressed the Fulton St layout in detail that I was asking you about a few weeks ago.

Now by rereading it, I know exactly what you were talking about!

    so, thanks again!!

Also is it far and how would I get there from Lexington ave where we are staying - is it better to get a cab there?

Also we want to buy a camcorder so we were told Best Buy, Circuit City or Frys are best electronics stores - again is this correct?

New York Splash Tour - Something New....

That looks like fun! I think I saw that vehicle going through Times Square.

    Park Slope

We%26#39;ll be staying in Park Slope on 12th St. between 4th and 5th Ave. and were wondering if it was a safe area to walk around at night? Also, after the broadway show, would it be safe to take the Subway back to Brooklyn or should we go for a taxi/bus?? Thanks:)

    Park Slope

Park Slope is a beautiful area, and it%26#39;s perfectly safe.

I don%26#39;t think you could even find a bus to get back there, and a cab ride would be quite expensive. That said, it%26#39;s also perfectly safe to take the subway. You don%26#39;t have any reason to fear.

    Park Slope

Thanks: ) NYC is going to be a little different than southeast Kansas:)

Different, maybe, but I think you%26#39;ll be surprised by how comfortable you feel very quickly.

You will rapidly find that the quality of the neighborhood increases as you head up the hill toward Prospect Park, and decreases (to industrial waterfront) as you head down the hill toward the Bay.

The subway is at 9th Street on Fourth Avenue (which is downhill from where you will be), which is pretty much everything Fourth has to recommend it. Don%26#39;t bother heading for anything beyond that in that direction. Fifth, on the other hand, is now full of restaurants, and as you get up into Sixth and Seventh and Eighth and Prospect Park West (aka Ninth), you will be deeper and deeper in the world of fine brownstones.

    Lucky ducks!

Funny, I just compiled a list of cool stuff in the Slope for my friend%26#39;s daughter who%26#39;s looking for some BKNY nightlife.

Oh how I miss the Slope! Fifth Ave is so hot right now. True, things get classier as the NUMBERS on STREETS get LOWER - and eventually turn into NAMED streets - and the AVENUES get HIGHER. (Example: 6th Ave and 2nd Street is a beautiful area).

5th Ave. is crawling with fun bars and restaurants. Even 4th Avenue (what I used to call ';Park Slump';) is starting to peck open its shell and give rise to fun shops and bars among the ';FLAT FIX'; mechanics and taxi garages. So, 4th Ave might seem ';icky'; because it is industrial and a six lane street, but it%26#39;s fine. In fact, one of my fave diners for hangover helpers used to be New College Inn, on 4th Ave and Union St. (It changed names now.)

Peruse these clickable maps to see the businesses on each street.

OK, now my list of my old faves. There are so many new places since I left 2 years ago, so please explore - and let me know about the new places!!!

Lighthouse Tavern - a friendly bar.

Commonwealth Bar - 5th Ave around 12th St. Owner is a sweetheart.

The Royale - 5th Ave. bwn 12th and 13th - drag, burlesque, comedy shows sometimes, but quality not guaranteed!

Hey, maybe you%26#39;ll see Steve Buscemi! ;o)

    (joke from prior thread.)

I live off of 7th ave on 12th st...Where are you coming from in the city? It normally costs around $20.00 for a taxi from downtown manhattan to 4th ave and 12th st...

mareff - do I smell a Brooklyn TA NYC forum meet-up?

    ;o)

kirbali - in the FAQ ';sticky'; is this collection of Brooklyn info:

YO, WHAT ABOUT BROOKLYN? Fuhggedabouddit! Here%26#39;s a collection of posts about our ';Fourth Largest City in America';, where 1 out of 7 Americans can trace their ancestral roots.

    tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g60763-i5-k884862-鈥?/a>

kirbali - I live in Park Slope and as previously suggested, you will enjoy your time there - in QB%26#39;s otherwise exhaustive list of places to go, she left off what is possibly the restaurant that is best of the best and it%26#39;s on 11th Street, just a few blocks east of where you will be staying.

    Applewood Restaurant

    501 11th street

    718.768.2044

    http://www.applewoodny.com/

Also, there a great restaurant on Flatbush at 6th Avenue called Franny%26#39;s that is also earning a reputation for great food - one of the best Neapolitan pizzas around - cooked in a wood fired oven - also great pasta dishes and seasonal appetizers.

Also on 5th is Tempo restaurant, also now considered among the best - and it has a bakery and gelato shop right next door that is fantastic!

My friend Steve Buscemi eats regularly at Sette on 7th Avenue - if you eat there and see him say hi to him for me.

There is also another new restaurant on 5th ave from an alumni from Blue Ribbon fame.. It is called side car and is on 5th ave between 14th and 15th I think...

Another is Spirito..9th st between 5th and 4th ave..Great affordable place regardless of what Time Out NY said!

Thank you guys so much! This is why I LOVE TA:)
