has anyone stayed recently in the YMCA West Side? I understand they are renovating it - what are the facilities like? Is the location safe?

Did you look at the candid photo%26#39;s? It does not look as bad as I thought it would be.

I have never stayed there but my father used to volunteer there.

It is safe and you are steps from Central Park. The block itself is quiet and may be empty at night. The people who work there are friendly. They have a swimming poop and a piano room, and the cafeteria food is decent. You%26#39;re a 5-10 minute walk from the subway.

It is an old building, and looks it in spots, quite frankly, but they do a decent job of maintaining it. I%26#39;ve read in reviews odd things about some of the long-term residents (';all of a sudden, an old man in a bathrobe pops up!';), but the tourists always seemed to have a pretty good time.

There are very detailed reviews on this website. If you read them, you will know exactly what the place is like both good and bad. According to reviews the 12th floor is renovated and the work is going on on the lower, unrenovated floors. If you like to sleep in, this is probably not the place for you right now. The location is perfect though.
