Subway New years day

Just really wondered if the subway is operating on new years eve/ new years day and if there were any restrictions on travel. I don%26#39;t fancy being stuck in the centre of the city at 3am trying to think of a way to get back to queens boulvard.

Trains and buses operate 24/7. Not as many operating at 3 am but you will get to where you are going. It just might take a little longer.

Last year the trains were running but some of stations around the Times Sq area were closed on NYE from around 6pm I think. I suspect that this was a security measure as the police presence and security is VERY strong in this area on NYE.

There are signs at the subways making it clear which stations will be closed.

I think the stations reopened after midnight as the crowds dispersed pretty quickly.

Trains run 24/7, 365 days a year. On New Year%26#39;s Day, trains follow a Sunday/Holiday schedule. The Times Square station is open, as are the stations nearby, but the access and exit points are strictly controlled, and you will NOT be able to just pop down or pop up the first stairs you see, even if you have your metrocard handy; you will instead have to use the open entrances, which may mean a queue.

The subway schedules are found here:

I was in the city on New Years Day for the last 2 years...great cheap theater seats as everyone else was sleeping. I%26#39;ve never seen Times Sq so deserted and the confetti was still blowing around. It had drifted over as far as 5th avenue! The city really didn%26#39;t ';wake up'; til about 2 in the afternonn. We had no problems getting around via subway from 11am onward. Some cleaning crews were still out and cleaning up the area in and around the Times Sq stop, but thats about it.
