Sofitel or 6 Columbus?

Hello,

I am going to visit New York with my mom on October 19-23. I had booked Sofitel for our stay based on the great reviews on this site. Yesterday, however, I saw a Quikbook offer for 6 Columbus that was quite much cheaper than the rate I have from Sofitel. As far as I understand, this hotel is completely new (/renovated?) and quite well located as well. Now I have two bookings and am wondering which hotel to take, after all?

The trip is a gift to my mom who has never been to New York before, and I would therefore like to stay at a nice place. The hotel doesn%26#39;t need to be extremely luxurious; most important is that it is well located, clean and comfortable. I wonder which neighborhood is nicer to stay at, and if anyone happens to know more about 6 Columbus (since it is just opened, I guess there isn%26#39;t much first-hand knowledge yet... but maybe someone living in the city has heard more about it)? If Sofitel is in a nicer area or is a considerably better hotel, I don%26#39;t mind paying the extra money; however if both neighborhoods are just as good and if 6 Columbus seems like a nice hotel as well, I%26#39;m not sure. I would love to be able to walk to most sights in the city, although taking the subway is not a problem, either. I%26#39;d also appreciate it if the area was safe enough to walk to the hotel later in the evening.

Many thanks in advance! :)

Sofitel or 6 Columbus?

I%26#39;m staying at 6 Columbus this weekend....I%26#39;ll post when I get back:)

Sofitel or 6 Columbus?

I stayed at the Sofitel last November and will stay there again this year. It%26#39;s very easy to walk from the hotel to Times Square and the Rockefeller Centre. It%26#39;s a luxurious hotel and the beds are amazing (just what you need after a long day sightseeing!!)

Haven%26#39;t stayed at 6 Columbus so can%26#39;t comment on it

You peaked my interest in the 6 Columbus as the rates are attractive. Looks like this was the old West Park Hotel which by the reviews on TA was one of the worst properties in NYC. I hope that they did a REALLY good job of renovating it!!!

I pulled this off of the Internet, apparently 6 Columbus talked up on the Today show, This is from Hotel Chatter.

'; 6 Columbus is the luckiest hotel alive. The place has been in the process of ';opening'; for about two years but it still has managed to garner some crazy good press.

The most recent happened today on the ';Today'; show when Travel + Leisure editor Nilou Motamed recommended to viewers this hotel as a ';splurge'; for the Big Apple. hotel. T+L got all 6C happy in their August issue despite the hotel%26#39;s unopened status so we guess they just continued it over at Matt Lauer%26#39;s house.

But when Matty goes, ';I%26#39;ve never even heard of this hotel';, Motamed was fast on her feet and said, ';That%26#39;s how new it is. It hasn%26#39;t even opened yet.'; Hmmm...can it qualify as a new hotel when it hasn%26#39;t even opened? Nevertheless, she then went on to say that the hotel will be open by the end of the summer which is sometime in September and definitely not by Labor Day weekend.

Motamed%26#39;s reasons for splurging here include the fact that it%26#39;s a Thompson Hotel and they make ';just really cool hotels'; and that the place will bring a bit of downtown NYC to midtown.

Room rates begin at $495 but if you%26#39;re like Matt Lauer, you%26#39;ll be happy to know this hotel as iPod docking stations in each room -- that is when and if it Axl Pomeranc ever opens his little 30 month renovation project.

I%26#39;ll look forward to reading the first reviews.

The Sofitel is a lovely hotel in a very good location. While 6 Columbus is also in a great location closer to Central Park, I wouldn%26#39;t chance staying there with your Mother given it hasn%26#39;t opened yet. Their rooms are also reputed to be very very very small. I%26#39;d stick with the Sofitel or look for something nice but cheaper than the Sofitel. If you don%26#39;t need extremely luxurious, there are certainly plenty of hotels that are probably less expensive than the Sofitel, although at this late date, not sure you%26#39;ll find any. What are you paying at the Sofitel?

If you do decide to try 6 Columbus, make sure you don%26#39;t opt for the smallest room as it will be really small.

If your reservations are on quikbook, you normally don%26#39;t have to cancel until 3 days before. That being the case you will be able to wait until I give my post...and another poster %26#39;tjtraveler%26#39; will also be there this coming weekend.

6 Columbus is an unknown and untested quantity at a property that%26#39;s been plagued with problems. Unless you and your mom are fond of being guinea pigs, I%26#39;d avoid it until there%26#39;s some solid reviews and they%26#39;ve had time to work out opening kinks.

The Sofitel is impeccable and will go out of their way to make sure that you enjoy your stay in the city. Very centrally located, and a generally knowledgable staff with an excellent conceirge service. If you want things to go as smoothly as possible, the Sofitel is one of the hotels sure to deliver.

The Sofitel in Chicago is probably my favorite chain hotel in this country - and I would imagine the NYC property is comparable. The best bed anywhere! The only thing that gets me out of bed is knowing the best apricot croissant in the world will be gone if I dont get to the restaurant early!

if you join their priveledged guest program prior to your stay, they%26#39;ll probably upgrade you, give you the welcome glass of Champagne and great but teeny box of chocolate in the room

Thank you for all your answers. :) It sounds like the Sofitel will certainly be a good choice. I can cancel both reservations until 3 days before arrival, however, so I will wait to hear runsooz%26#39;s comments on 6 Columbus before making a final decision.

In the meanwhile, I%26#39;m of course still open to other hotel suggestions, too. Maybe there is a nice and clean hotel that is a bit cheaper than the Sofitel and that I have missed? The only problem seems to be that most hotels are quite full booked for these dates, and it is hard to find a good deal.

In any case, I will let you know where we ended up staying, after all... :) I can%26#39;t wait to be back to New York!
