Popping the question in NYC

Help!

I%26#39;m heading to NYC in early December w/ my girlfriend and I want to pop the question there. I%26#39;m still in the planning stages. Any suggestions? I don%26#39;t really want the traditional dinner proposal. Something romantic but yet w/ some public around so we can share our happiness.

Please help! I%26#39;ve never been to NYC. We are staying at 102 Brownstone and will be in town on a Thursday staying through Sunday.

Thanks

Popping the question in NYC

There is a few threads on this search it in the box. I believe a popular place is in central park maybe the ice rink ? and I think there is a spot by the south street seaport looking at the Brooklyn bridge is nice as well . Plenty of people around there. Horse and carriage ride? I guess weather can play a part to your decision.

Popping the question in NYC

Welcome skorch and congratulations. There are quite a few previous threads on the subject. You may not realize there%26#39;s a search function just above in the strip. Here%26#39;s one to get you started.

Some popular places are

Top of the Rock

ice rink at Rockefeller Center or Wollman Rink in Central Park

I%26#39;m going to be in New York for the NY Rangers Hockey game on 4th October. Ticketmaster doesn%26#39;t seem to have any tickets, but there%26#39;s loads of other websites offering tickets. As I%26#39;m still in the UK right now, I was wondering if there%26#39;s a box office I can go to out there to get tickets at the last minute at all ?

Also, am not on a massive budget so looking at the seats in the top %26#39;400%26#39;s%26#39; or %26#39;300%26#39;s%26#39; at the goal ends....is it a good atmosphere from there ?

Thanks !

How many tickets do you need? I called to get tickets to a game in March as ticketmaster only had single seats available - so if there are only a couple of you it might be possible to get seats close together. Or go to MSG when you arrive - have a good time!

Trip report - September 13-23 Days 3 and 4

Two more days wandering and eating my way through New York!

Trip report - September 13-23 Days 3 and 4

Day 3 – Sunday September 16th

Another spectacularly beautiful day in New York. Today, Dave and Les planned to meet their son Glen and his girlfriend near their apartment in Brooklyn – since both are very busy, it’s easiest to get time with the “kids” if you head out to their ‘hood. Anne and I were invited, but didn’t decide to tag along until Sunday morning; so I called Dave %26amp; Les to tell them that we would meet them so that we could travel together to get to the restaurant by 11AM. Glen chose Sweetwater Restaurant in Brooklyn, a really fun restaurant that used to be a bar – a great outdoor patio in the back, but for a party of six, only inside tables. A really cool older building - loved the atmosphere, the choices of food were great, and the food was excellent.

After a couple hours of sitting and chatting, Glen and his girlfriend headed off to work and appointments, and the rest of us headed back to Manhattan. I had discovered Tudor City with its the beautiful parks during my visit last year, but none of the rest of my group had been there before. We took the subway to Grand Central, then walked the couple blocks east to the lovely, secluded area of Tudor City. We wandered past all of the buildings, took in the views of the UN and the water, as well as the traffic below us on 42nd, then grabbed a couple teas and juices at the local store, and sat and relaxed in the park. What a gorgeous day.

One can only relax so long when in the city, so we headed back to the subway, and our neighborhood. Anne, Les and I wandered through the Columbus Avenue Street Festival to check out all there was to see and buy, and Dave headed back to Jack and Judy’s to rest since he was fighting a nasty head cold. We shopped for a few hours – up to 90th and down to 66th, over to Amsterdam to try to find an Italian restaurant that had been recommended by a friend, then stopped back by Rose Wine to pickup another bottle of the great Merlot that we’d tried Friday night, and a bottle of Cabernet. We stopped for a coffee and cookie along the way, and really enjoyed a great band that was playing in front of Senior Swanky’s - very fun, enjoyable day.

As the festival was winding down, we headed back to the B%26amp;B to catch up with Dave and make sure he was doing okay without us (HA). We met some Canadians that seemed really fun who were moving into apartments 7, 9, and 10 – we talked about TripAdvisor, and she said she was at Jack %26amp; Judy’s because of Daisiegee!! After a fun visit with our new neighbors and tours of each others apartments, Dave, Les, Anne and I headed over to Popover Café on Amsterdam for a rather early dinner - they do have good food, but their popovers are truly spectacular. Then back to our apartment for some more wine on the lovely patio until we were too tired to talk.

Trip report - September 13-23 Days 3 and 4

Monday, September 17

We received an 8 AM phone call from Judy saying that the hot water heater was flooding the downstairs, and there wouldn’t be any hot water for a while. Since Anne was still in her bed, I headed downstairs in my PJ’s to chat with Dave and Les for a while – who had been up a while and had already showered. After a while, I thought I’d venture up and just take a cold shower, but when I got upstairs, Anne was boiling water to mix with cold to wash her hair. Lucky that she did that, because the plumber arrived and the water was shut completely off, so not knowing how long we’d be dry, we opted for sponge baths (ick!) and headed out.

Dave had an appointment with a knee doctor on the Eastside on Tuesday, and I (“being the tour director”) wanted to be sure he was comfortable with the way to get there. We “practiced” with the 79 cross-town bus to Lexington, then headed down to Serendipity, which I’d heard all good things about, but had yet to visit. It was fun to checkout the “other” side of town, and we walked down Lexington for a while, then 1st for a change of pace, then 2nd – on the way we made sure that Dave was comfortable with his planned trip for the next day. We could have switched to another bus – or subway - but what fun is New York if you don’t walk?

What a fun, interesting restaurant Serendipity is. Sometimes I do the stupidest things, though – we’d been eating quite a bit of high-calorie food, so now, at this restaurant (why?!) I decide to eat healthy – I must be nuts! I had a wonderful fruit salad that was fantastic, and a pink ice that was superb – but next time I’m getting dessert and frozen hot chocolate! I felt sorry for Dave at first, as he was the only man in the room (upstairs), but soon others were there with their wives, so he wasn’t quite so outnumbered.

Debbie planned to come back into the city to meet with us again – Anne and I wanted to treat her and her brother and sister-in-law to dinner, because they had bought us lunch when we met in May. I called her as we left Serendipity to tell her to park somewhere near where her brother works (across from Bryant Park), as we planned to eat dinner in the same area – and it would make it easier for her to get home afterwards. Les, Dave, and I agreed to meet her near Bryant Park, and Anne headed out for some shopping with plans to call later to see where we would meet for dinner.

After meeting up with Debbie, we caught the bus downtown and the girls headed for ABC Carpet and Home Store (one of my favorites) while Dave hit the outdoor gear store. We shopped for a couple hours, didn’t buy anything, then met up with Dave at the chocolate counter in ABC where we picked up some delicious chocolates - - then wandered over to the tables in La Pain Qoitidien , picked up some drinks – and sat and relaxed for a bit.

We wanted to checkout Kiehl’s for lotion and such, so we walked over there and shopped a bit, then wandered around the area before catching a bus back to Bryant Park. Glen had a print on display at the Library that we wanted to check out, but after going through the purse and bag-search, we realized that the print area was already closed – so back through the bag-search and out to sit in Bryant Park to wait for Debbie’s brother to get off work. Anne called from Macy’s, so she walked over and met us.

The plan had been to eat at Bryant Park Grill, but it was closed for a private party, so we decided on the Oyster Bar at Grand Central, so wandered over there. It’s such a beautiful building – I just love the ceiling - and the restaurant was lively and fun, the food was excellent, and the company was great. Nothing better than spending time with old friends AND new friends! After dinner, Debbie’s brother and wife took the train home to Queens, and we walked Debbie back to her car, then back on the subway and home to Jack %26amp; Judy’s. The water was working when we returned – yeah – but I couldn’t believe another day had ended.

I%26#39;m going to stop recommending Jacks as it%26#39;s getting harder to get a reservation! I do so love your ';wandering'; tales, it%26#39;s like being on them with you.

Another 2 wonderful days and I agree, felt like I was there with you.

Wow, everyone knows Daisiegee! I think J%26amp;J ought to keep an apt. available for their star, free of course.

I love your reports, but I have to say I%26#39;m a little disappointed that you chose to start counting calories at Serendipity!

Bettina - that was one of the stupidest things I%26#39;ve ever done, I don%26#39;t know what I was thinking!! That will be the FIRST place I go when I return, and I won%26#39;t even think about the calories.

Daisiegee - The Canadians wanted out Apt #8, but were happy with their rooms - when she said she read about J%26amp;J on Trip Advisor I said Daisiegee, and she said, Yes, Daisiegee - were your ears burning?

Hi Chissis, it%26#39;s your Canadian friend from Jack and Judy%26#39;s! I%26#39;m enjoying your trip reports...sounds like you had a wonderful time in New York. So did we...loved Jack and Judy%26#39;s too....and thanks to Daisiegee for her suggestion! Hahaha...don%26#39;t worry, I %26#39;m sure you%26#39;ll always have %26#39;priority%26#39; there, Daisiegee!

I can%26#39;t believe after all this time of %26#39;lurking%26#39; at TA, I%26#39;m finally making my first post! I definitely will write a trip report in the near future.

My family and I had a great time in New York...what an amazing city. %26#39;We%26#39; were 7...myself, husband and daughter in room 7, and son and bride from Edmonton room 9, and our good friends from Delta in room 10. We loved our rooms, and the area.

RIght now I%26#39;m having my morning coffee...Zabar%26#39;s of course!

Chissis, I sure wish we could have enjoyed some wine with you on your cute deck...maybe next time? We kept so busy, and were hardly %26#39;home%26#39;.

Our trip was an annual %26#39;family%26#39; vacation...imagine travelling with your kids in their late 20%26#39;s! How lucky are we!

And to your New Yorkers...we loved your city, and especially the people. We were so taken care of...everyone was so helpful.

To all you TA city experts, it was because of you that our vacation was a success...all your tips, suggestions were so appreciated.

bcdiva--so glad you enjoyed Jacks. It%26#39;s a very personal thing choosing somewhere to stay, and what I am happy with might not necessarily suit others but I LOVE JACKS. Counting down the days till my New Year visit

Great chissis.

Bcdiva - so glad you posted! I was feeling guilty because we weren%26#39;t around to share our patio with you, so glad to hear you were busy as well. It was so much fun to meet you - hopefully we%26#39;ll meet again at Jack %26amp; Judy%26#39;s!!

  • Travelling form Ireland to NY

I%26#39;m going to New york in November for the first time for Halloween!

Do I need to complete any documentation/forms (other than passport)before I go??

Is there much difference between a Taxi and hiring a Sedan to Manhattan?

    Travelling form Ireland to NY

Whether you fly from Shannon or Dublin you will go through US Immigration at the airport in Ireland. Before you get to the immigration desk there are forms to be filled and then handed to the immigration official. Be warned these are very stern individuals and dont seem to take lightly to any joking. There were 7 in our party and we were waiting for each other to come through and were given out to for loitering.

The immigration official will ask you a few questions about the purpose of your trip etc. and finger print you and take a picture of your eye. It only takes a few minutes. Part of the documentation you fill out needs to be kept and given to the official at JFK after baggage collection.

Hope this helps and have a wonderful trip.

    Travelling form Ireland to NY

    Halloween is in October

Thanks waterford, Thanks for the info.I%26#39;m actually going into Newark

The same procedure will apply no matter what airport you enter the US through. Immigration in Ireland and hand over part of the green form on arrival.

You can enter under the visa waiver scheme. The forms should be available on the plane from your stewardess.

A taxi is probably a little cheaper; a sedan a little nicer. I usually just take a taxi as I don%26#39;t want the hassle of trying to find the car.

Travelling from Ireland is different %26amp; you will have all your forms done at airport of exit unlike travelling from the UK where the air stewardess will give you the forms and you go through immigration at point of entry.

and remember that as of this week (4th October) the rule have changed and hey have just got much stricter on having the address while in the USA so have your hotel confirmation available with the full address - No more just writing ';Hilton Hotel, Times Square'; or whatever.

USA Officialdom%26#39;s info sent to my company%26#39;s travel section is:

    ----------------------

Advance Passenger Information (API) for the United States 01 September 2005

Effective 04 October 2005, the U.S. Legislation will require additional API data to be collected. The API data will be required for all passengers arriving and departing the U.S. and must be extracted from the passenger%26#39;s passport at the time of check-in.

To avoid lengthy delays, please advise all U.S. bound passengers to ensure they have their relevant information with them for processing at time of check-in.

Chesire Cat - I knew all of this apart from the %26#39;hotel confirmation%26#39; part. Not a problem, but is that 100% accurate?

Yes it%26#39;s accurate and the hotel part is new.

Thanks. That%26#39;s the first time I%26#39;ve seen that you need to provide a copy of your hotel reservation confirmation as well as the full address, which I%26#39;ve known about for some time.

It%26#39;s the kind of thing you have about you when checking-in but the check-in process is just going to get slower and slower don%26#39;t you think?!

  • Garment District Shopping Tours

    Hi Folks

I%26#39;ve just heard about a couple of shopping tours through the garment district with access to private showrooms etc such as this one www.nyctrip.com/Pages/Details.aspx?TourID=308

Has anyone tried these? Is it worth it?

I%26#39;m normally quite happy to wander around shops and waste my money without a guide - but thought that this might have some added interesting info.

    Garment District Shopping Tours

Hmmmm, I%26#39;ve never done it, but I%26#39;m not convinced it%26#39;s worth $90. Four hours of shopping on your own could be more productive, if you know what you want.

Also, the garment district showrooms may have limited sizes since they primarily make mock-up samples for buyers.

Instead, sign up for sample sale emails from

    www.dailycandy.com

    www.topbutton.com

Or peruse the sample sale listings in Time Out NY magazine when you%26#39;re here.

    Garment District Shopping Tours

    Thanks QB

These sites looks like a much cheaper option - although the daily emails are just going to make me crazy with jealousy at not being there.

FYI, Most stores in the garment district have signs on the doors saying that they sell wholesale only and require a ';resale'; certificate (which exempts the purchaser from paying sales tax).

I walk through there every day on the way to work

LivesinNJ - True, but it%26#39;s funny how some ';sales certificates'; have pictures of former U.S. Presidents on them in the center....

    ;o)

Seriously, some stores are more stringent than others.

';Al Por Mayor'; means ';Wholesale Only'; in Spanish. You%26#39;ll see that.

    West Side ymca

has anyone stayed recently in the YMCA West Side? I understand they are renovating it - what are the facilities like? Is the location safe?

    West Side ymca

Did you look at the candid photo%26#39;s? It does not look as bad as I thought it would be.

    West Side ymca

I have never stayed there but my father used to volunteer there.

It is safe and you are steps from Central Park. The block itself is quiet and may be empty at night. The people who work there are friendly. They have a swimming poop and a piano room, and the cafeteria food is decent. You%26#39;re a 5-10 minute walk from the subway.

It is an old building, and looks it in spots, quite frankly, but they do a decent job of maintaining it. I%26#39;ve read in reviews odd things about some of the long-term residents (';all of a sudden, an old man in a bathrobe pops up!';), but the tourists always seemed to have a pretty good time.

qb - that swimming poop sounds enticing!

There are very detailed reviews on this website. If you read them, you will know exactly what the place is like both good and bad. According to reviews the 12th floor is renovated and the work is going on on the lower, unrenovated floors. If you like to sleep in, this is probably not the place for you right now. The location is perfect though.

    Shopping - Bridal

    Hi All,

I am travelling to New York at end Oct 07. As I have booked my wedding in Mauritius next year (May 08) I was hoping that I could maybe buy a dress in New York for my wedding. Does anybody know of any bridal or evening wear shops that sell off the rail dresses 鈥?something that would suit a beach wedding? My friend bought her dress from a chain called David鈥檚 Bridal during their $99 sale. Can anyone tell me if there is one in New York or can anyone recommend another shop?

    Many thanks

    Jean

    Shopping - Bridal

There is a David%26#39;s bridal in Queens 3500 48th street

I am not a fan of this place but if you can get a good deal fine. I would check macy%26#39;s and see if they are getting rid of dresses also.

    Shopping - Bridal

    Congratulations Jeannie! Good info here

    tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g60763-i5-k905865-鈥?/a>

%26gt;I don%26#39;t think David%26#39;s Bridal is in Manhattan.

%26gt;Someone mentions RK originals which is.

%26gt;There%26#39;s a whole building of bridal stuff mentioned in the above post.

%26gt;J Crew is mentioned and they have some lovely simple dresses that would work for a beach wedding, but these are only sold in their catalog, not in their stores.

    parking in soho?

last time we drove in for the day from our 3 hours away, we just dropped into a parking garage...but the disadvantage is not being able to easily unload shopping bags throughout the day. So for one day%26#39;s parking, is street parking feasible anywhere, and how safe is it?

    parking in soho?

It%26#39;s fairly feasible and I%26#39;d say generally safe, but you need to read the signs so you don%26#39;t get a ticket.

Re: safety - you will reduce the safety significantly if you use your car as a publicly-viewed ';storage facility'; for your shopping purchases.

Nothing screams ';break into my car'; more than the owners putting bags from boutiques or the Apple Store in the trunk (boot) or back seat of a car, locking up and walking away for an hour.

I%26#39;d use a garage staffed by humans and cameras.

    parking in soho?

thanks -- I was worried about leaving things in the car....just carry it all, I guess. Or exercise prudence rather than our arms....

    help- need advice

I am overwelmed trying to plan a day trip to NY when we are in Conn. for a few days. We are flying into Chicopee Mass on a Saturday night. We need to be in Farmington Conn. Monday and Tuesday. We have all of Sunday free and are renting a car. My husband has never been to NY and I havn%26#39;t been in years. I don%26#39;t really want to have our car to drive in NY to see the sights. I am trying to figure out where we could stay near NY on Saturday night that would not cost a fortune and parking would not cost a fortune. We could take a train or bus or subway into N Y and use the public transpotation the day we are there and go back Sunday night and head to Conn. Any Ideas????

    help- need advice

Since you are doing this on a Saturday, I%26#39;d suggest looking into driving and parking your car in Stamford, CT and taking Metro-North Railroad into Grand Central Terminal (www.mta.info) There is a parking garage at the Stamford station.

There is closer train service in Waterbury, but the trains on weekends are much more limited.

    help- need advice

So, when exactly do you wish to be in NYC?

Your post is a bit confusing.........

Please clarify your schedule for the City.

    Poppa

I think they were looking to stay somewhere between Farmington, CT and NYC so that they could then take public transportation into NYC.

My dates are Nov 3-6 2007. Thanks for the quick response.

Just drive down into Stamford. Park your car. Take the railroad in.

    Very simple.

Or drive to New Haven and park there and take MetroNorth into New York, the train leaves every hour, at least.

Unless you are flying a private plane, you are not flying into Chicopee, you are flying into Bradley Airport, which is in Windsor Locks, CT

    This posting is confusing...

BobbyC - thanks for your comment - I%26#39;m still not sure what%26#39;s up here.

    Poppa

They%26#39;re flying in Sat. Nov 3.

Sunday Nov 4 is day they have free and they want to go into NYC.

Monday Nov 5 and Tuesday Nov 6 they have to be in Farmington, CT

We are flying Sky bus from Columbus Ohio to Chicopee. Thats where Sky bus flies into. It costs $10.00 for the first 10 seats. Check it out at www.skybus.com.

You say you%26#39;re flying into Chicapee Mass on Sat. night? I don%26#39;t know what time you%26#39;re flying in, but that%26#39;s pretty far from NYC. I think you%26#39;ve underestimated distances. The nearest Metro North station (commuter train) from Chicapee seems to be Waterbury Ct. which is more than an hour%26#39;s drive from that airport and the only train from there on a Sat. night seems to be 7:20 pm and takes more than 2 hrs. to get to NYC with a transfer in Bridgeport. If you waited til Sun. morning, there%26#39;s a 7:20am train that would get you into Manhattan in about 2 hrs. but I don%26#39;t think Waterbury is a very nice place to stay.

You%26#39;d have to drive pretty far west or south to get to another Metro North train station. Amtrak.com is another train option but much more expensive. There%26#39;s Amtrak service from Springfield (which is close to Chicopee) or Hartford. That will take more than 3 hrs. and it doesn%26#39;t look like there are any evening trains. On the airport website there%26#39;s some more info. I%26#39;d call the airport and ask for their help.

    http://www.wmass-arptcef.com/general.html

I know there is bus service from that area into Manhattan but I don%26#39;t think that%26#39;s what you had in mind.

I have of course lost all my valuable info which i will try and search to find again but in the mean time my main question was:

There are 8 girls arriving from Dublin in Nov and i wanted to book a limo to take us to our hotel - i know i got the name before of a company that would fit all of us plus 8 suitcases and hand luggage but i can%26#39; t remember what it was, any ideas???

I want to book the ';Accomplice: New York'; tour for my visit from the UK, but on the booking form it says you need a US or Canadian cell phone number, as they phone you the day before with secret directions.

How did people get around this? Did you just enter your usual number with the UK dialing code in front? I emailed them on Sunday but have had no reply so far and there%26#39;s only 2 tickets left for when I want to book!

Thanks for any help you can provide.

On the FAQ%26#39;s on their site it says

You can leave a hotel number if you鈥檙e from Mars. We鈥檒l hit you up there.

You can think about getting a sim card for your phone, prepaid isn%26#39;t too expensive.

    Recommendations on apartment

    Hi

Would really appreciate your help. Am travelling to NY for the first time with 2 teenagers - daughter 13 and son 17. I have checked the accommodation on the apartments2book site and the following 4 are available and look good. I would really appreciate your opinions. We want to do the usual touristy things and travel next month for 5 days. The apartments are:

2 Midtown South at 31st Street

8 Murray Hill at 39th Street

11 Upper Westside at 75th Broadway

    30 Midtown Central Park Residence

We want to see Ellis Island, do a bus tour, visit central park, catch a show, visit MOMART, do some shopping and see Chinatown. That%26#39;s the agenda

    Recommendations on apartment

Do a search on this site to see the discussion on renting apartments. The verdict is that it is more trouble than it%26#39;s worth. Most New Yorkers cannot legally rent out their apartments and scams are rampant. Why are you looking at apartments? This is not a city where apartments are rented, get a hotel.

    Recommendations on apartment

apartments2book.com is reportedly a reputable site

Someone, don%26#39;t remember who, wrote here last month, that the agency can be slow in responding

are you very certain those are definitely available?

Actually, apts 2 book uses mostly suite hotels so I can tell you which those are and you can look up reviews right here.

    8= Eastgate Tower

    11=the Beacon

    30=the Buckingham

The Buckingham has got the best location of these 4 right near Central Park, witghin a walk to the Times Square area for shows, bus tour and not far from MOMA. HOWEVER, some of their rooms are nicer than others and I would say it%26#39;s probably not as nice a hotel as the other 3.

The Affinia Manhattan is the next most convenient location for you but it sits in a commercial area (near Macy%26#39;s so good for shopping) that most locals don%26#39;t like but many tourists find fine. You can walk to Times Square from here too.

The Eastgate Tower is in midtown east and is central (not far from Grand Central Terminal) with large rooms.

    The Beacon is on the upper west side, an area just north of midtown that many people love b/c it%26#39;s more residential but still not too far from midtown. This was the area featured in the movie ';You%26#39;ve Got Mail.';

If you%26#39;re going for location, I%26#39;d say the Buckingham. If you%26#39;re going for nicest hotel, probably Affinia Manhattan. Only other thing I%26#39;ll add is not all will have the same bed configuration. I don%26#39;t know what size suite you%26#39;re thinking of (studio or 1 bedroom) but if you%26#39;re looking for 2 proper beds (vs. 1 bed and 1 sofabed) or even 3 beds, not sure all will offer that in a studio. Have you asked?

Forgot to add, you might want to check prices quoted from

apts 2 book vs directly on the hotel%26#39;s website and also on quikbook.com Occasionally they%26#39;ll be the same or cheaper on one of the other sites. It is true we%26#39;ve heard apts 2 book has been slow in response recently, but I think that may have more to do with the hotels themselves being slow at getting back to apts 2 book on availability than anything else.

Thanks so much for that. It%26#39;s great to get the names of the hotels so I can check directly. Apartments 2 book have confirmed availability on all the properties I listed. Will check directly with the hotels and post result. Thanks again for that

Hi, we have always booked apartments(although in a hotel, not actual apt.s people would live in if you know what I mean) because of extra space and bedding configurations, and just to have a small kitchen(Not that I would ever dream off cooking while in New York) I have used apartments to book in the past and they are good, but I would be very surprised if you got any of them to stay in next month. I triedto book 2 of the addresses with apt.2book back in June for November and could not get any of them for any dates in this month!! Best of luck, oh by the way, the Affina Manhatten is a great one to stay in, and you can book directly through their website.

Isn%26#39;t it 80 degrees in New York this week? I gather the rink is ';artificial';, but can they keep it frozen if the weather stays this hot?

    Inn at the Falls

My husband and I are considering taking a short trip to the Hudson Valley region in October. Has anyone ever stayed at the Inn at the Falls or knows any thing about this Bed and Breakfast Hotel as it is called? We usually stay at the Courtyard on Route 9 but we really don%26#39;t care for that hotel.

    Inn at the Falls

Inn at the Falls is located in a section of Poughkeepsie called Red Oaks Mill. It is slightly off the main roads. It%26#39;s the equivalent of two blocks from NYS Route 376 and probably around three miles from Route 9 via Spackenkill Road or Vassar Road.

The Inn is located next to a stream with a small waterfall popular with local fishermen. It looks more like a small hotel than a B%26amp;B. I remember touring through it when it first opened more than 25 years ago. I remember that no two rooms are alike. It looks well maintained and I serve on the boards of some nonprofit agencies that put high-level guests up there. My guess is that it is a step or two above the Courtyard.

There is also a more traditional B%26amp;B about a mile north of the Red Oaks Mill intersection on Route 376 called The Copper Penny Inn. You may also want to consider the Vassar Alumnae House at Vassar College, although they may still require you to have some Vassar connection (parent, alumna, etc.) It recently underwent a major renovation and you may enjoy a stay there.

    Inn at the Falls

My husband and I stayed there about 10 years ago in one of the better rooms. It was very nice. They delivered a nice basket of fresh baked goods in the morning. I remember it being a nice little weekend getaway.

It is like a small hotel with a quaint feel. We prefer that to a bed and breakfast. That is just a little too personal for me.

  • Park Hotel, Weehawken, N J

it may be a little late to ask but i am meeting a friend in new york at the end of this month for a week vacation. she is from central europe but has been to nyc many times. myself, never. she insists that the commute to the city from weehawken is no big deal for a good room price. so i have 2 questions.....is weehaken a convenient commute (public transportation)? and can i do better than/same as the Park Hotel in the city for around the same price?

    thanks.

    Park Hotel, Weehawken, N J

I had never heard of this hotel before your post and on looking at the reviews here, I know why. This is a terrible place to stay. Didn%26#39;t you read reviews?

Weehawken is not a terrible commute, but it does depend on where you%26#39;re staying in Weehawken and how much you%26#39;re prepared to spend for commuting. The Sheraton on the Hudson in Weehawken has a ferry right at the front door that will take you across to NYC in no time, but it costs ~$6 each way. Buses are available but will take longer and are subject to traffic tie ups.

Have no idea what the price is at this other hotel but it%26#39;s not likely you can get a room with a private bath at a comparable price in Manhattan, but I wouldn%26#39;t recommend staying at the Park Hotel.

    Where is your friend staying?

    Park Hotel, Weehawken, N J

Forgot to give you the link for reviews

    tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g46907-d559356-鈥?/a>

In case you didn%26#39;t know, if you put the name of any hotel in the search box at the upper left (if it%26#39;s not in NYC, type in the location too) you%26#39;ll be led to a link with reviews and ';candid traveler Photos%26#39;.

thanks. i read the reviews and thought it might be a gamble but the price is okay..70/night. my friend will be with me. i will check out the sheraton.

It will NOT be ok with dirty sheets with fleas and ticks. You%26#39;d be better sleeping on a park bench. DON%26#39;T stay there. If you%26#39;re staying with your friend, get a room in a hostel. Hostelz.com has a search engine. There are hostels with private rooms for 2 and you share a bathroom. I hope for your sake there%26#39;s something available. What airport are you flying into? If JFK or LGA, getting to Weehawkend is a real pain. Look at the Pan American hotel in Queens. It%26#39;s further from Manhattan, but much cleaner.

    panamhotel.com

Or look at the Comfort Inn or Quality Inn in Long Island City. Not attractive area, but close to Manhattan and at least the rooms are clean.

    tripadvisor.com/Hotels-g48080-Long_Island_Ci鈥?/a>

Sheraton too expensive for us. Thinking we can try out the Park and revise plans once we are there if it doesn%26#39;t work out. I was more concerned about things like late commutes if we are out for a show. When we travel, we tend to be out by7 or 8 in the morning until 11 or 12 at night, sleep, shower and do it again the next day. We%26#39;ll how it goes. Thanks.

just a follow-up to other readers. i took nywhiz%26#39;s advice and checked out hostelz.com. found a doublebed, private room, shared bath four blocks from central park. much better. great recomendation.

Glad you took nywhiz%26#39;s advice. She is not an expert for nothing. The reviews of Park Hotel were abominable and it%26#39;s not okay to just say that you would be out all day when the beds are where the major problems are reported.

Good job on the hostel - which one?

Dexter House. I went to other websites which have reviews and the majority of recent (past year) remarks were quite positive. The price is right, the location sounds great. I have used TripAdvisor for a number of years to read reviews but this is the first time I pursued a line of questioning on the Forum and what a good outcome.

We will be making our first trip to New York in September of 2008. We will be staying on West 95th Street between Columbus and Amsterdam. Any information on how to get from the airport and great restaurants and things in the area would be wonderful. We need to know all the do%26#39;s and don%26#39;ts of NY. I would appreciate ANY information! Thank you!

    New York Upper West Side

    hello

Did you have a look at the sticky look here before you post? It has answers to all the questions you may have to start and then I am sure you will have some more, to ask of us.

    New York Upper West Side

Are you looking for taxi info or public transit info?

As for dining, $ or $$$$.

You can walk down Broadway from 96th street to 72nd street and there are plenty of places to eat.

You can also walk down Columbus or Amsterdam Ave. The neighborhood offers an eclectic choice of restaurants.

Our friend NYC10025 is away, but here%26#39;s his excellent list of UWS restaurants, plus a link to a NY Times tour of the area:

    where to stay??

i cant seem to find a hotel under $300 per night...and its hard to even find that...there mostly $500 a night. i would like something $200 or less.

it will be my husband and 3 children and were looking to come late March.

    where to stay??

I honestly think $200 or less is unrealistic even for March.

Especially since you will be needing a room with 2 double beds and a sofabed which makes for a more expensive hotel room.

    $200 = $174 + tax

    where to stay??

we will need some dates. $200 or less for a suite or a place to accommodate all of you is going to be hard. I would suggest a B%26amp; B Called 1871 house it is a self catering apt style accommodation. they maybe able to help. Anything decent is going to be more than $200. Murray hill east suites, and the affinia group of hotels but now were talking more money. You could try the wellington, nothing fancy but good location. It still may not be in range.

    did you check quikbook?

    whats quikbook?

    the dates are March 25-27

what month do you find the cheaper rates? we wanted to com during our kids spring break.

    thanks!

The problem for you is that you need a hotel room that can accomodate 5 people.

Are your children small enough that they can sleep 3 to a double bed?

If not, you are going to need a suites-like hotel room which means $300/night.

we have one 3 yr old, 12 yr old and 14 yr old...all boys.

if we stay outside of NY where can we park? are there alot of parking garages? the things we want to see are statue of liberty, ground zero, maybe walk around time square...

you are driving to the city? Travel inn is the only hotel basic with free parking, I am not sure if it can accommodate you.

If you stay outside the city like in Queens at the anchor inn or the adria Ramada or the adria, you can park the car there included with your stay. You could try New jersey

    www.nycgarages.com

    www.Iconparking.com

quikbook is a site for hotel rates.

You might want to look into the suites at the Hotel Newton

www.thehotelnewton.com but given that their rooms with two double beds are already priced at $170, the suites will be more.

Outside in NJ, the Embassy Suites in Secaucus, NJ might be an option, but you will have to go back and forth to the city on a bus and even with them the rate is $235 + tax.

The Embassy Suites in lower Manhattan show no availability for your dates.

I think you%26#39;re really going to have to up your budget a bit if you want to stay in Manhattan.

I stayed @ the Wellington with my younger daughter when she was 10;it was fine-not fancy, but good location. Try travelaocity.com-we%26#39;ve gotten good rates with them..also,try to call hotels%26#39; managers-see if they%26#39;ll help you out with price(children and all)can%26#39;t hurt to try!

yeah i guess im going to have to shoot for the $300 range...but no way am i doing $500! lol

ill check out some of those hotels mentioned.

    thanks

Travel Inn has a few larger rooms as does the Skyline Inn and

what you will save in parking can go for entertainment, good

food, or a few dollars above $200 if necesary.

Proposing to my girlfriend in NYC

In a recent New York Times wedding story, the writer mentioned Grand Central as a possible place to have a non sit down wedding.....i think it would be a sensational place to pop the question......the main waiting room is magnificent and she will always remember it.....you might want to skip the worst of rush hour (not 8 to 9:30 am and not 4 to 6:30 pm) but there are always people around......and loads of restaurants nearby to conclude the evening....including Metrazur which overlooks the station

I think Grand Central is a beautiful idea. The Campbell Apartment is a nice place to have pre or post-proposal drinks, as well.

    yes Kate,

    that麓s the one I linked..

    can麓t forget that :)

I think asking at the whispering arches in Grand Central would be cool. Of course you%26#39;d be standing with your backs to each other 20 feet away from each other!

The Rainbow Room or Top of the Rock at Rockefeller Center -- or the skating rink! Both lovely settings in winter (perhaps the former if the weather is bad, the latter if it%26#39;s nice out!). Lots of the more popular places/restaurants/landmarks will be quite used to having special events there and can probably help make sure things go smoothly if you call in advance.

    Best of luck!

(one piece of advice -- especially since it%26#39;s your first time in nyc, do yourself and your fiancee a favor, and spring for a cab or car service for transportation to/from the special event(s)!)

    Cheap Accommodation

    Hi

Am boggled looking for accommodation in NYC. Want to visit from 28th Nov to 3rd Dec and cant afford the extortionate prices for the even basic hotels - there seems to be either hostels or hotels with shared bathrooms and affordable prices (although expensive for shared bathrooms) or ridiculous prices. Would pay up to $100 for a bed and breakfast type place or a private bathroom but less for shared facilities. Am not opposed to hostels (have done plenty in my time) but definately want a private room.

Any ideas - would love a brown stone B%26amp; B place but they seem to be booked / expensive.

    Cheap Accommodation

    Hello Tiggy O,

Unfortunately most B %26amp; B are usually booked at least 3 months in advance and are usually the first for of accommodations that are booked before hotel.

I think you might have to rething your budget for what you are looking for. This is an expensive time of year, not only that but hotels and places of accommodations are increasing their prices all arount due to the low dollar (baasically taking advantage of it) hotel prices are at a all time high.

In any event - try http://www.thepodhotel.com/

or you might have to consider staying outside of Manhattan - maybe at Newark airport.

    Cheap Accommodation

Tiggy - bad timing looking for a %26#39;deal%26#39; in NYC - as you noted through your research prices are high.

I GOOGLED YMCA and this came up - prices in the $60-80 range - check it out...............

    %26gt;Total of 430 rooms; No minimum stay, maximum stay is 25 days upon availability. West Side YMCA (Co-Ed) (212) 875-4100 5 West 63rd Street%26lt;

    Good Luck

    Poppa

The budget is real low even for a shared or private bathroom. The only place that comes to mind is in jersey near the path train is the Holland Motor inn that is clean and decent but travel is involved. Other than that you are going to have to up the budget or deal with a shared bathroom and still pay over budget.Hotel 17 is decent for a shared bathroom.

other budget hotels and they will still be over your budget is the

    walcott

    Travel inn

    wellington

    Park south

chelsea lodge- most likely is booked

second home - can see if anything available , but no private bath

I would look for deals on travel zoo or try priceline but the budget is still too low.

    good morning tiggyO

So what would you get for 30-40 pounds in the heart of London? You won%26#39;t get anything as nice here for that amount. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but that is the truth. if they have rooms avaiable the Larchmont Hotel is reasonably inexpensive: http://www.larchmonthotel.com/rates.htm (don%26#39;t forget prices in the US are almost always +tax, add 13.375% and an additional $3.50 per night to get the total price; $80=$94.20, $100=$116.88) The average price for a hotel in New York (Manhattan) is about $300, more during busy season, and the weekyou have chosen is one of the busiest of the year.

Sorry, don%26#39;t mean to lecture you. I would try for hotels in Queens, (an outer borough of the city) near a subway line. Prices at some of the hotels furthur out from the city seem to be about $175/night for that period and you can get a weekly pass to the subway/bus system for $24.

I%26#39;d bet money you are not going to find anything with a private bath for $100/night which means about $88 before taxes in Manhattan.

Since you sound like a young person, the Super 8 motel in North Bergen, NJ will work for you. They have rooms starting at $90/night for your stay.

    Afternoon

I have booked two rooms in April next year at the Sutton Residence. There is only one review and in French but it is good - and the Residence is perfectly situation in mid town. For $120 for a room sharing a bathroom with one other seems the best deal I can find. Worth a try, I%26#39;m certainly going to. Good luck!

The Sutton Residence may be a good idea, but you%26#39;d be sharing a bathroom there too. It%26#39;s 6 bedrooms with 3 bathrooms.

You might contact citylightsnewyork.com who do ';hosted'; apartments meaning you stay with someone in their apartment but will get your own bedroom and possibly your own bath. I still think it will be at least $125/night for a decent place. Your budget is unrealistic for what you want. You might find something for that price outside Manhattan (Brooklyn, New Jersey) but for 6-7 nights at the busiest, most expensive time of year, I%26#39;m not hopeful. Some people bid on Priceline for a 3* Jersey City hotel (found in the NYC area airport section) and get the Hyatt Regency or the Doubletree Club-usually for under $100/night. Look on biddingfortravel.com for more info.

You might contact Leo House but my guess is they%26#39;re booked already.

    tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g60763-i5-k602672-鈥?/a>

Do a search for b %26amp; b%26#39;s in Brooklyn. You might find something there. Just check here first on location b/c some areas of Brooklyn are very far or not very safe.

You might want to check out Carlton Arms. It%26#39;s around Gramercy, close to the Village. It is definately nothing special, very old and with weird art on the walls, but its fairly clean. Most rooms share bathroom, but some have private ones. Rates are around 70-80 for shared bathroom and around 110-120 for private.

Like the previous posters have said: Unfortunately (I wish so bad it wasn%26#39;t so, so I could come to NY more often) your budget is completely unrealistic.

    Best of luck, though.

PS: If you%26#39;re a first time tourist, I would go out of my way to stay on Manhattan (or very, very close), so I would go for the crappy room with shared bath on Manhattan instead of a decent room at an airport or way out in one of the boroughs.

  • Hop Stop Users Come In....

I am trying to figure out what train to take from Times Square down to Chinatown (Canal and Centre St.)

But I am a bit confused by the directions. It tells me what train to take but then it lists a few streets that we will pass. Does this mean that we will pass these streets while on the train? Or does it mean that we will be walking these streets? I hope I am making sense.

It is telling me to take the Q train from Times Square and to get off at the Canal St/Broadway.

Just wondering if this sounds right. We are going to head over there this afternoon bf dark. Thanks!

    Hop Stop Users Come In....

Hopstop lists the names of the stations you will pass while riding the subway. Many stations have street number names, as I%26#39;m sure you have seen already.

As long as you get to the Canal Street station that services the

    #6/N/R/Q/W/M/J

you%26#39;ll be in the right place. This is a single compex of multiple stations connected by tunnels.

The Canal Street stations that are serviced by the #1 or the A,C, E are too far west for your purposes.

Finally, I strongly recommend taking a deep breath and relaxzing, and try out asking locals on the street or subway workers for directions.

    Hop Stop Users Come In....

The Q will get you there the quickest, that%26#39;s why it%26#39;s telling you that, but the N, R or W would also be fine. Take whichever one comes in first

Yep. Never hesitate to ask people who seem to know where they%26#39;re going. If we look unpleasant or hostile while riding the subway, it%26#39;s probably just our default look to discourage panhandlers and crazies from talking to us. We%26#39;ll snap right out of it and try to help ya out if you just ask nicely. Sometimes even just looking all lost and confused at a map will prompt bystanders to offer their advice. You%26#39;ll do fine!

There is a mall in Watertown called Salmon Run, although i don%26#39;t think it is an outlet. You might try a search online for outlet malls, I think the closest true outlet is Waterloo, which is between Syracuse and Rochester.

    Rural USA - East Coast

My family is visiting Dec-early Jan. We begin with a few days in LA before flying to Orlando then travelling up the east coast via Charelston (2 days there) to NYC (by train). After NYC (9 days), we plan 5 - 6 days in DC before flying back to LA for one week...then home. Now the question.....as well as the big cities, we are really keen to explore a rural area that is %26#39;Amtrakable%26#39; from any of these destinations. We would like to see this aspect of the US to give us a bigger picture of life in America. Needs to be a 1 hour or less trip from the city. Most places I have looked at seem to be fairly big cities from an Australian perspective (ie Richmond) or are too inaccessible with awkward timetables (eg. Charlottesville). Thanks!

    Rural USA - East Coast

In general I%26#39;d say 1 hr. from most cities may get you to suburbia but probably not a ';rural'; town. I%26#39;m not sure if you%26#39;re asking for a place within an hour, (a ';day trip';) of the cities you%26#39;ve already selected to stop

    LA

    Orlando

    Charleston

    NYC

    Washington DC

OR if you%26#39;re asking for places you might pass through on your Amtrak trip if you%26#39;re allowed to get out wherever you want. I think you%26#39;re much more likely to find ';rural'; on your train trip between Orlando and NYC than you are within an hour of any of those cities. There is nothing ';rural'; within an hour of NYC. There are some pretty countrified places within say 1-2 hrs. of NYC. Cold Spring, Rhinebeck, Westpoint are just a few and you can get to these on the Metro North commuter train from NYC. Here%26#39;s a link to the Metro North page for 1 day getaways from NYC

    www.mta.nyc.ny.us/mnr/html/outbound.htm

I think you might find more rural areas an hour from Orlando, Charleston or even Washington, but they won%26#39;t be ';amtrakable'; but they may be accessible by some other public transportation. Amtrak tends to service larger towns.

    Rural USA - East Coast

Have you considered a trip to the Amish country in Pennsylvania? It%26#39;s more than an hour from NY, but not too far from Philadelphia and both Philly and the Amish are worth visiting if you want to see an important and different part of America. To locate the Amish, look up Hanover, PA..they are the religious group that practices peacefulness and no acceptance of modern conveniences. They farm, drive horse and buggies and no electricity. They are special.

Philadelphia has great historical significance for us and has a section of the city which replicates what it looked like in Colonial times...about 300 years ago. You can get to Philly from NY by train.

I hope you enjoy our beautiful country and we are pleased you want to visit!

Saphhire, I was thinking the same thing. A stop in Philadelphia is well worth the visit. It is the most historic city in America and has a beautiful Center City area. From Philadelphia it is approximately one hour by Amtrak to Lancaster, PA. This is the heart of rural Amish Country. This area is spectacular at Christmas time albeit cold. There are also many one day bus trips available from Philadelphia to the Amish Country although you may not get the full rural feel from such a bus trip it will give you a good idea of rural Amish life. Check out the Philadelphia and Lancaster, PA forums for info.

Sounds like a wonderful trip. Have fun planning! Moms

I was thinking Amtrak to Rhinebeck - but its about 2 hours. I bonded with someone on the train, so got a ride to town from the train station - but they probably have cabs. Other than that, you can get around the town without a car. I can never remember the name of the historical inn there, but they have an annex property called the Delemater House, which is a group of Victorian houses divided into really nice rooms - antiques, four poster beds, etc...

Woodstock is nice too, if you want a sort of hippie theme park small town. You have to take a bus though - no trains.

As another poster said, an hour outside NYC just gets you to suburbia. However, I would bet that the Charlston environs are mostly rural (though I%26#39;ve never been).

I think you%26#39;ll need a car to see a rural area though, even if Amtrak stops in a rural area you won%26#39;t be able to see much beyong the train station without a car.

The suggesting to see the Amish (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amish) in Pennsylvania is excellent -- these would be tours to ';Amish Country'; in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Most will leave from Philadelphia, though I%26#39;m sure you can find some from NYC. A quick check on the web revealed this tour company www.phillytours.us/tours/tourDetail.cfm鈥?/a> which leaves from the Philladelphia train station (30th Street Station). I would check further on the Philadelphia Forum of TA.

From the DC area (where I lived for a year) I%26#39;d recommend going out to Harper%26#39;s Ferry, W. Virginia. You would need to go by car or tour bus. It%26#39;s a charming 19th century historic town in a rural area with a stunning view of the Potomac and Shennendoah rivers. The town itself is of historic importance because the abolitionist John Brown died there and, as a result, much of the town has been turned into a living history site. Take a look at the pictures here 鈥ikipedia.org/wiki/鈥?C_West_Virginia to see how lovely it is (and take a look at this pic http://www.wvtourism.com/photogallery/WV%20Attractions/images/Harpers%20Ferry%20DEF.jpg)

As another poster points out, Philly itself is enourmously charming, walkable and historic. However, Philly doesn%26#39;t ';...have a section which replicates what it looked like in Colonial times...';, it has a section which actually dates from Colonial times and still has many 18th century buildings standing, in use and tourable.

LivesinNJ is correct. The oldest continuously inhabited street in America is in Philly, Elfreth%26#39;s Alley, along with a plethora of other colonial buildings still in use as museums or homes/businesses. Moms

Have you thought about driving - it is not that hard. American drivers are more courteous than home. Both my husband and I drive here. You can hire a car and drive to the Catskill mountains in NY or the Poconos mountains in Pennsylvania. (I have been to both- both great !) - I would cut 3 days off the NYC part of your trip to squeeze the car trip in. For car hire look at

    www.globalcars.com.au

they include all the costs into price - this includes insurance.

I don%26#39;t want to burst your bubble, but Charleston is not a large city (smaller than Richmond).

Summerville is about 30 minutes away and has one of the top US Relais and Chateaux properties, the Woodlands Inn (http://www.woodlandsinn.com/). It would pricey but would give you a nice taste of smalltown living with some luxury.

Another place is about an hour upr the coast. Georgetown, SC, was one of the first settlements in the US. It would give you an excellent snapshot of what smalltown living in the south is like.

While I%26#39;ve been to Amish country, it wasn%26#39;t that fascinating to me and I don%26#39;t know that I would recommend it. It%26#39;s neat to see the horse-drawn carriages, but that%26#39;s about it.

Instead, I would highly recommend the Brandywine Calley area in Pennsylvania and Delaware. It%26#39;s about an hour south of Philadelpha. You%26#39;ll find many bed and breakfast establishments. There is a lot of American history in this area since it played so prominently in the Revolutionary War. It%26#39;s also home to the DuPonts, so there are estates that dot the landscape all over the place. Some of them have been turned into tourist attractions themselves: Winterthur and Longwood Gardens are the 2 that come to mind. it really is a gorgeous area. Town names to look for would be West Chester and Kennett Square.

Whoa - I obviously didn%26#39;t spell check that one!!

I%26#39;m wondering what you might consider rural. Maybe you would enjoy the river and scenery taking the train up to, say, Beacon, NY? I don%26#39;t know what%26#39;s going on Dec/Jan though as far as the tourboats. Do realize it can be freezing up north of the city (the city is NYC) that time of year. Although it was a very warm winter last year...and then the blizzards started just before and after Easter.

You could also take the train all the way to Hudson NY...do it during the day ...sunset is what 5ish?...to see the river...the train runs along the river. TYou%26#39;ll see some beautiful countryside on the way up and the town is terrific, quaint, walkable. You can walk to b%26amp;bs there. Tons of wonderful decor and antique shops. It%26#39;s not a typical little country town though. Terrific restoration of the main street and grand hsitoric residences. Since you have 9 days in NYC you might stay a night in Hudson.

How much time do you want to spend in the rural area? You might see if you can figure a way to do it during your DC stay...or on your way. Say, cross around Southern Va or NC from east to a bit west and then go north.

There are several rural styles. There%26#39;s the mountains and valleys and small towns; there%26#39;s areas of flat open space full of farmers and fields; there%26#39;s coastal areas that feel rural.

I%26#39;m looking at the Amtrak routes. You%26#39;ll certainly see a lot of country areas going from Charleston to NY too. the thing is, where to get off. Looking at the route I see a train might stop...at least there is a stop...in Selma NC, an agricultural area that celebrates annual Railroad Days and American Music Jubilee. But while the town is quaint it still has some of the modern casual dining experiences. It can be hard to find a truly country town unaffected by the modern ';big box'; here and there along our major route, I95 and where Amtrak stops. Selma has a Cheesecake Co. and antique shops too. and a population of about 7000.

I remember when one could park right down by the incoming train, close to the tracks in Lynchburg, Va. You didn%26#39;t have to bother going in the building...just wait in the car so your guest would step from the train to your car easily. The station was only open overnight because one train arrived anytime from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. going one way....and came back around 5 a.m. or so. When it left, the train station closed down for another day. That was only maybe 10 years ago or so. Now they have a proper parking area and shops made out of the little buildings all around, nice landscaping etc. and more to come.

It would be interesting for you to check out an Amish area if you could. You ight look up the Pennsylvanian which goes from NYC to ... well, Pittsburg actually...but has a stop in Lancaster Pa. You could find out about transport all. You will see town activity and open fields for farming. But you%26#39;ll be here during our winter so while there might not be much farming you%26#39;ll also be here during Christmas time and New Year%26#39;s which will be very exciting all over.

Have you discovered that when you get the Amtrak site there are options to click on like ';Whistle Stop'; with facts and personal stories and memores; and the Interactive route Atlas. These can be helpful.

You migth also look into Ashland Va., which has an Amtrak station. You can get the train north/sort of northeast to DC/NYC from there.

The lamb lies down on Broadway.....trip report part 3

Hey Nic - not Tom Waits but who?

The lamb lies down on Broadway.....trip report part 3

    “Early morning Manhattan,

Ocean winds blow on the land.

The weary guests are asked to leave the warmth of the all-night theater, having slept on pictures others only dream on.

    Movie-palace is now undone,

The all-night watchmen have had their fun.

Sleeping cheaply on the midnight show,

Its the same old ending - time to go.

    Get out!

It seems they cannot leave their dream

Suzanne tired her work all done,

Thinks money - honey - be on - neon.

Cabman’s velvet glove sounds the horn

And the sawdust king spits out his scorn.

Wonder women you can draw your blind!

Don’t look at me! I’m not your kind.

    I’m Rael!

Something inside me has just begun,

Lord knows what I have done,

And the lamb lies down on Broadway.

    On Broadway -

They say the lights are always bright on Broadway.

They say theres always magic in the air.”

We woke up 2 hours later on this Thursday than the day before so around 6:30, that felt a whole lot better. Waking up before six is not human - after six feels better if not great; I am not much of a morning person. We did the usual morning stuff and we were thinking about going to Roosevelt Island by subway and then take the Tram back to Manhattan again but we didn’t have the energy for that so we just had a quiet morning watching TV. Just before 9am we went to the 23rd str station and took the C train to 81st str and the Museum of Natural History. We were early there so we just sat outside in the beautiful weather(this was supposed to be the day with the “worst” weather) waiting for the museum to open. We were among the first in when they opened and quickly bought ourselves tickets for admission and the space show at 10:30. We had some difficulty finding the entrance to the Space show, there is a elevator you take from the first floor up to the 3rd floor where you wait in a sort of….well waiting area. They show clips so you get the background to the main show which was(is) Cosmic Collisions narrated by Robert Redford. They opened the doors and you enter this circular room and then the show begins. We loved the show; it was spectacular unlike anything I have seen before. Robert does a great job narrating and I promise you will never look at the moon and the sun in the same light again, very fascinating stuff.

The show lasted about 20 minutes and when it was finished we began exploring the Rose center for earth %26amp; space from the bottom to the top. You can spend a long time in there but you know…”so much to do and so little time”. When we were through with the Center we looked at the massive Museum shop which had a lot of interesting stuff especially for kids of course. We found some things we wanted to buy for the kids but the boxes were just too big for our tiny luggage(ok, they are not that tiny but hey it was only Thursday and we had a lot of more shopping to take care of so…no). We then proceeded to the elevator to go to the 4th floor to see the DINOSAURS; you can never be too old for dinosaurs, they are just as cool now as when you were a child…..admit it! We walked around the 4th floor for about 90 minutes looking at these amazing skeletons of creatures so different from us that its hard thinking they have really existed but the proof is right there. But I am sure there are some people out there thinking it’s just a hoax masterminded by the evil government or CIA. We and especially I loved the Museum and most of all: the space show – a must in my book.

We said goodbye to the Dinosaurs %26amp; Co. and headed on to Columbus Av where we were going to eat at the Ocean Grill. We got seated right away by the window in this rather upscale dining room – we felt slightly underdressed. I ordered the organic salmon with new potatoes and frisee salad and the lemon emulsion sauce. J ordered the tuna with broccoli and sun dried tomatoes and the tomato relish sauce. The food was excellent; the fish were perfectly cooked and every thing tasted really fresh. It was the best dining experience so far on this trip. The staff was very nice and accommodating but we witnessed sort of harsh argument between two of the women on the staff(and no guys, no catfight), rather strange.

When we were finished we headed town to the green lung of NYC; Central Park. On our last visit it was one of the best things on the trip and it didn’t disappoint this time either. How could it; it was sunny and hot and everything was still green, not like here in Sweden where autumn has really taken over. We bought an Oreo ice cream for THREE bucks which tasted like someone had melted the thing and then put in the freezer again which probably was what happened with it. In December we didn’t get to see the Bethesda fountain in its full glory but this time we got the full experience and it is spectacular. The whole area is just amazingly beautiful so we sat there for a while letting it all sink in. We then continued through the park down to the Grand army plaza and FAO Schwartz which we skipped last time due to the ridicously long queue. We entered the premises and got greeted by stuffed animals from the Harry Potter universe; the animals were huge and plenty in numbers and beautifully crafted. It was just a shame the kids weren’t with us…..but we probably have had to carry them out of there, they wouldn’t have left willingly. We browsed around the store looking for things for the kids especially for Lego which is much cheaper in the US and some dolls for our daughter. We found some good stuff but then we got a little cheap and started wondering if they maybe were cheaper in Toys R Us so we left the store without buying anything at all.

We set our sights on the big GAP store on 5th Av, they have really good jeans for the kids and we were on the hunt for a black hood-jacket for my mother. It was all she wanted from New York and because she was watching our kids and of course she is the woman who gave birth to me, we had to buy her one, a really good one but that wasn’t not going to be easy as we discovered; more about that in future episodes. We bought some stuff and headed to the subway station on 53rd str to take the E train down to our station on 23rd str. It was so hot down there that the devil would probably complain and ask for air conditioning. It was the first time I felt that we had to wait a long time for a train to arrive but eventually the right train came and we got to our apartment. We unloaded our purchases and started the whole “going out on the town” procedure again; shower, make up, changing clothes the etc.

Around 6pm we were ready to go and have dinner. We chose to go to an Italian restaurant on 8th Av called Colas. The reviews on Menupages had been favourable so we decided to have a go which turned out to be a big mistake. We were the only ones there on this early hour but it’s never nice to eat totally alone. I ordered the ravioli and J the Whole wheat penne. We soon got the dishes and they were ok but far from great – it tasted like something you could have made at home. We finished our meals and went our way feeling a little bit ripped off even though the meals were quite cheap. We took the 1 train uptown to 50th str where we was going to get our tickets to the Broadway show we were attending this evening; Legally Blonde. We got the tickets at the box office in the Palace theatre and the doors opened soon afterwards. We went in and found our very good seats in the orchestra at the K row, we paid about $73 per ticket via Broadwaybox.

The show started at 8pm and ended about 2 %26amp; ? hours later with an intermission of 15 minutes. We both liked the show but we were a little disappointed; it was not as good as we hoped it would be. The Scenography was great and some of the performers like Orfeh and Michael Rupert were excellent but Laura Bundy in the leading role wasn’t that good and the biggest problem was that the songs weren’t strong enough; they didn’t stick - a long way from the quality of say Mama Mia. I thought that Evil Dead which we saw last year was much better, more camp and funny and better music but hey that’s just me.

After the show we went by Toys R Us which had “already” closed so we headed to Juniors for some of their famous cheesecake. I had the Chocolate swirl and J the raspberry. We took it home to our apartment to eat it. I have to say after two disappointments this evening I was kind of nervous tasting it but it didn’t disappoint. It was fantastic; creamy, full of flavour and absolutely fabulous. So I fell asleep with a smile on my face around 12:30am.

The lamb lies down on Broadway.....trip report part 3

sounds good matte . I am just keeping up with your reports.

    Matte75,

    Peter Gabriel and Genesis!

I%26#39;m loving the ';musical'; introductions to your trip reports. Brilliant!

Didn’t make time for the Museum of Natural History or the Rose Centre when I was in NYC last May but I think it’s definitely something I will have to do next time.

“I ordered the organic salmon with new potatoes and frisee salad and the lemon emulsion sauce. J ordered the tuna with broccoli and sun dried tomatoes and the tomato relish sauce. The food was excellent; the fish were perfectly cooked and every thing tasted really fresh. It was the best dining experience so far on this trip.” My mouth is watering already. I’ll have to check out the Ocean Grill on my return trip.

“… the green lung of NYC; Central Park.” I love that description.

Great travelogues so far Matte. Keep them coming.

I’m trying to guess what the musical introduction will be for your next report!

Hey buddy....am loving your reports and wanted to tell you that i am one who never tires of old dinosaur bones as well...heck, in a few years.....i%26#39;ll be old bones too!!!! whenever I see them, I just allow myself to daydream..... putting myself in the days when they roamed the earth and even picture myself being chased by one. But that sequence never ends well........

other than dinosaurs, Egyptian exhibits also get me excited. lol I swear, I was either a cave man or an Egyptian King (or Queen) in previous lives, I dont know........

I really do love your writing style and sense of humor...all written with ease and a straight face, I%26#39;m sure. From the outside, you appear to be a quiet man, but lurking under that innocent facade you must be quite a jokester!!

Darn it with usair, the storm and those crazy ladies that made me so late to the meet up!!

I will be watching for your return to NYC and it would be my pleasure to take you and mrs matte out to dinner to make up for not being able to sit with you at traceys.

OK...get busy with the rest of you trip, you have us all sitting on the edge of our seats waiting for the next installment!!!

';.... i am one who never tires of old dinosaur bones as well...heck, in a few years.....i%26#39;ll be old bones too!!!! whenever I see them, I just allow myself to daydream..... putting myself in the days when they roamed the earth and even picture myself being chased by one. LOL!

    buca45,

You are one who definitely has a great sense of humour. ';.... But that sequence never ends well........'; I almost had coffee coming out of my nose I was laughing so hard! :-)

Now look here, Johannes. You%26#39;re Daniel, I%26#39;m Nic and I knew it was Genesis so there!

Matte, be careful you%26#39;re letting your Swedish side come through. Preferring Mama Mia to Legally Blonde. Man, that%26#39;s dangerous talk round these parts.

So, your mother%26#39;s a hoodie is she? Probably explains a lot.

Other than that, another very entertaining slice of life in old New York for 2 young Swedes. I like the way that you didn%26#39;t make your report the first post - I do find it aggravating having to scroll all the way down to find the next post. Johannes, can you ask your evil twin not to this when he posts his report?

Thanks for the kind words people.

Buca - I thought you were a fast man, run Forrest run!! :-))

Nic - I will come out and say it: Mama Mia is a better show than Legally Blonde. There and its not just patriotism on my part.

Johannes - Ocean Grill was great even though a bit expensive, the fish was $24 each but totally worth it. And you should really visit the space show - I felt like a kid again.

    Matte75

Matte, what are you implying by saying Buca is a %26#39;fast man%26#39;?? ;o)

Another great report. I love your sense of humour.

Really looking forward to hearing your version of the meet-up

Ange I wasnt implying anything at all besides speed through the muscles in your LEGS!

Oh and I noticed an error in the report; it should read West village for the next episode

I%26#39;m really enjoying your reports Matte, it sounds like you had a great time.

I%26#39;ll be in New York in just over a month but because both my boyfriend and I have been so busy in work and since we are going to three other places first (Buenos Aires, Iguazu Falls and Rio de Janeiro), I%26#39;m really only starting to think about New York now. We are hoping to spend a day in the Natural History Museum and you have really whetted my appetite for it!

    Tack sa mycket!

  • Getting from JFK Airport to Manhattan

Hi, I hope you can help we... We will be visiting New York at the start of December and I%26#39;m wondering which is the best way to get from JFK airport to Manhattan, our hotel is located a few blocks off times square so any information would be an amazing help. I would prefer to use public transport..

    Thanks so much...

Getting from JFK Airport to Manhattan

    Welcome.

FYI, this is the more general New York State forum. You%26#39;ll get more responses if you post on the New York City forum.

Be that as it may, yours is a popular query. Check out the link on Arriving and Departing in the FAQ ';sticky'; at the top of the NYC forum:

    tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g60763-i5-k1490232鈥?/a> Look_here_before_you_post_NYC_FAQs-

Remember that ';best'; and ';cheapest'; are usually not the same thing. AirTrain to the subway or LIRR is very easy. You can also take the Airport Bus. (NOT the Super Shuttle. Whatever you do, don%26#39;t take the SuperShuttle.)

Also, when you post on the NYC forum, be specific as possible. Vague questions get vague answers.

Any hotels with a nice pool?

Hi--we live in Niskayuna and have family visiting that would like to stay at a hotel with a nice pool. Does anyone have any recommendations for a hotel in the area? thanks!!

Any hotels with a nice pool?

The Turf Inn on Wolf Road has a pool.

Also the Desmond has two pools.

Museum of Chinese in the Americas

    Hello,

Just a quick question. Has anyone been to Museum of Chinese in the Americas and is it worth a visit.

    Thanks :-)

Museum of Chinese in the Americas

The current location is on the second floor of a small building I believe on Mulberry or one of the side streets. I was there a few years ago after having gone to a similar museum in San Francisco and I was honestly very disappointed. In NYC the museum is very small with only a hand full of displays. Nothing to write home about. I think they might be, however, expanding in the future to a much larger space right across from a nice Kuan Yin temple (which is very worth the trip) that is on Lafayette Street. I have seen a sign on the first floor window but I bet that has been there for over a year now but it%26#39;s still not open ..... so who knows what%26#39;s up or the current status.

But please have a look at the Kuan Yin temple on Lafayette Street if you have a chance ..... Kuan Yin is the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy (she%26#39;s also an oracle who can tell your fortune). There is another similar temple on Mott Street (which is much smaller and probably more frequented by curious tourist) and there is also another temple on East Broadway at the foot of Canal (which is very large). Me and my wife always pop in the temple on Lafayette. It almost looks like it%26#39;s closed from outside but it doesn%26#39;t close till after 5:00. It doesn%26#39;t look like much from outside but you need to go in the see the gigantic 1,000 armed statue of Kuan Yin. If the monks and congregation are chanting ...... you%26#39;ll really feel like you%26#39;re in another world.

Museum of Chinese in the Americas

Thanks for the heads up. I think ill give it a skip and check out one of the temples instead.

    Lotus-

is the one on Mott the one we call the Mazzola Temple? the whole alter is covered with bottles of Mazzola corn oil? and oranges?

do you know the significance of the Mazzola?

A visitor from San Francisco showed me that place

evening ..... the Mazzola oil is for the monks who like to grease down and mud wrestle in their spare time. Hahaha ..... that%26#39;s obviously a joke ...... no the oil is to keep the three flames that are floating in the oil. The flames represent the three gems of Buddhism. The Buddha, the Dharma (the teachings) and the Sangha (the monks %26amp; congregation)

    BUDDHAM SARANAM GACCHAMI

I go to the Buddha for refuge.

    DHAMMAM SARANAM GACCHAMI

I go to the Dhamma for refuge.

    SANGHAM SARANAM GACCHAMI

I go to the Sangha for refuge.

    Lotuspath,

I tried looking up the Kuan Yin temple on Lafayette Street but i can%26#39;t find anything. is that the official name for the temple and what is nearby so when i pay Chinatown a visit I will be able to find it.

    Thanks :-)

    but why Mazzola?

the image of monks wrestling in oil is going to stay with me forever - thanks! I%26#39;m still freaked out by the monk who was flirting with me in Chiang Mai in 1997!

  • 19-23 dec...should i bother?

    hi all,

first time to nyc on the dates above, is this a good time to visit or are many places closed for christmas holidays...?

what i mean by places is the usual.. shopping... shopping shopping!!!

does metro work as usual also?

    thanks in advance...

    19-23 dec...should i bother?

Places are open. We are the city that doesn%26#39;t sleep.

    19-23 dec...should i bother?

The first question is can you find lodging? That is a very popular time.

If so, yes the subway works 24-7-365 - hurricanes/blackouts and other strife notwithstanding.

Except for Dec 25, all stores are open all the time. Store hours are shorter on Sundays.

Everything is open during the dates you mentioned! It will be busy with people doing last minute shopping but this time of year is magical in NYC. You%26#39;ll find yourself walking around with a smile on your face.

The subway doesn%26#39;t stop. Ever. (unless there is of course some sort of mechanical problem).

Also, we don%26#39;t celebrate Boxing Day here, so everything is basically open on Dec 26, too.

This is actually a great time to visit imo. The hotel prices are not bad (vs. earlier in Dec.) and theater tickets are more available. The downside is the stores are mobbed with last minute shoppers.

reasonably priced restaurants near museum of natural history

Any suggestions for reasonably-priced restaurants near the Museum of Natural History ? Especially any that are open on Sundays?? Choice of cuisine is optional....

reasonably priced restaurants near museum of natural history

First, you should tell us your definition of ';reasonably-priced';. Too subjective.

Then, if you put ';dining natural history'; in the search box, you%26#39;ll find lots of previous suggestions like this one:

    tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g60763-i5-k1186871鈥?/a> -Dining_in_Upper_West_Side_Manhattan-

Yes, they are all open Sundays. For hours, locations and to see menus, search them on

Thanks! I%26#39;ll take a look at what you said, and then be back with questions probably!

    travelmom,

I just returned from 8 nights in Manhattan. I spent way too much time and energy researching restaurants before the trip.

All you have to do is explore the 2 or 3 block area around where you are (in this case, the museum). There are tons of restaurants everywhere with their menus and prices right in the windows. Half of them aren%26#39;t even listed anywhere.

I looked for places loaded up with locals. I also asked anyone standing around where to go. That is 10X easier and more effective than doing it from home. Besides, if you%26#39;re in a neighborhood, something may strike your fancy for a spur of the moment meal which you hadn%26#39;t planned on. These are often the best.

So quit worrying, and enjoy. It%26#39;s fun to explore restaurants. No-one has EVER left NY hungry, guaranteed!

Richie has given you great advice. There are a gazillion restaraunts in the immediate vicinity of the Museum. To the East of the museum is Central Park and you won%26#39;t find many (maybe none) in that immediate area, but if you go west (away from the park) you%26#39;ll see them.

BTW, the museum has a good cafeteria--not cheap, but good

Thanks to everyone! Actually, my daughter (age 15) with whom I%26#39;m travelling doesn%26#39;t like too much planning....I think we will just look around.
